Robert Byrd and Terry Schiavo

Teri Schiavo has been sentenced to death for her inability to care for herself. The basis of the decision to starve her out were here alleged words to her husband that, "should she ever be unable" to care for herself, she would wish to die. Well, those two granters of wishes, Michael Schiavo and Judge Grier, in their wisdom and benevolence have set about starving Teri in compliance with her alleged desires.

Now, medical technology has developed rapidly in the past 50 years or so, but starvation has been around much longer than that. So I am wondering, why, a great American hero like Robert "Sheets" Byrd has had so much difficulty in realizing one of his wishes....

...You see, when racial integration of the military was under consideration, Byrd is on the record as saying:

I am a typical American, a southerner, and 27 years of age, and never in this world will I be convinced that race mixing in any field is good. All the social 'do-gooders,' the philantropic 'greats' of this day, the reds and the pinks ... the disciples of Eleanor ... the pleas by Sinatra ... can never alter my convictions on this question ... but I am loyal to my country ans know but reverance to her flag, BUT I shall never submit to fight beneath that banner with a negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, then to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throw back to the blackest specimen from the wilds.

Quoted in Graham Smith, When Jim Crow Met John Bull, pg. 225.

Now I don't know if a thousand times is medically possible, but it seems to me that Byrd could be starvd at least once. Now that the military is integrated, I would hate to see Byrd have to go on living in direct contradiction to his wishes. Can we find a judge with the courage of Judge Greer to deny food to Robert Byrd?

Disclaimer: This is humor. Satire. I'm not like John Kerry's friends some 30 years ago and actually advocating ill to a U.S. Senator...I'm simply provoking thought. I would never dream of snatching a drool covered cheeseburger out of the mouth of senator Byrd.
