1. Grab a calculator (you won't be able to do this one in your head).
2. Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the area code)
3. Multiply by 80.
4. Add 1.
5. Multiply by 250.
6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number.
7. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again.
8. Subtract 250.
9. Divide number by 2.

Do you recognize the answer?

The next time a cashier asks for my phone number when I give her a check, I am going to put her through this whole process. LOL. Imagine the looks I'll get from the people waiting in line.

Can I use the calculator on my computer???

No, PC calculators are much different than regular ones.  Something about the bytes & CPU speed throws the sum all off.

Do you recognize the answer?

Ummm, no. It looks like someone's phone #, but not mine.

Number tricks like this are just an entertaining way of using algebra.

Let x = the first 3 digits in your phone number.
Let y = th elast 4 digits in your phone number.

Then the steps can be written algebraically as:

[250(80x + 1)+ y + y - 250]/2

Simplified:

[20000x + 250 + 2y - 250]/2

Simplified further(the +250 and the -250 cancel each other out):

[20000x + 2y]/2

Simplified again:

10000x + y

As a previous poster stated, 10000x + y is the heart of the trick. The rest of the steps are added only to make it look mysterious.

There's the story that the number belonged to Jenny, a band member's ex-girlfriend, and that he wrote the song to get back at her for dumping him. She supposedly got a restraining order taken out against him and won a court order to have the song pulled from the airwaves for awhile.

Other explanations have her becoming angry with him and changing her number (which, ironically, is what the song begged her not to do). In another flavor, the band is sued by a sheriff who had both a daughter named Jenny and the notorious 867-5309 as his home number.

Too much information: In our local area, the number was said to be to a junior high school.
