SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Kevin Hamilton scored a career-high 26 points, 11 during a 23-5 run, leading Holy Cross to a 78-73 win Tuesday night over Notre Dame in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.

The Fighting Irish, who trailed by 13 points early in the second half, used a 9-2 run to close to 60-59 after a pair of 3-pointers by Chris Thomas and a basket by Rick Cornett with 4:20 left. The Crusaders answered with five straight points and maintained the lead down the stretch.

It was the first postseason victory for the Crusaders (25-6) since beating Southern Mississippi 56-54 in the first round of the NIT in 1981. Since then Holy Cross went 0-6 in postseason games, although it managed to throw scares into Kentucky in the 2001 NCAA tournament, Kansas in the 2002 NCAA tournament and Marquette -- an eventual Final Four team -- in the 2003 NCAAs...

If you're playing in the NIT, win or lose, you're already a loser.

Looks like Holy Cross has a head start on winning the tourney and becoming number 65!

Whoopee.

That would be 66. They also had the "play in" game tonight for numbers 64 and 65.

Notre Dame should be glad they only had to play Patriot League rep, HC. If Bucknell had come calling it would not have been this close.

The idiots at the selection committee have no problem selecting the first 63 teams, but, when it comes to that 64th squad, they suddenly can't make a choice??

It's all that sappy whining: "aww, the bubble team is so cheated...they should get a chance too....."

Like a school with an undergraduate population of 2,700 has a chance of winning the NCAA Tournament?

I'll take an NIT win over Notre Dame (undergraduate population of 8,200) over a one and done appearance in the NCAA any day.

Read it and weep Domers.

ND lost tonight's Catholic Civil War. And both schools are run by the same order: the Holy Cross Order!

Actually, it's kind of an "in-your-face" to Dick Vitale. He basically said that Northen Iowa stole Notre Dame's NCAA berth. He is an unabashed Notre Dame football fan, and an unabashed ACC basketball fan.

Of course, he also has three ACC teams in his Final Four bracket......

He's also an unabashed ass, bay-bee. Notre Dame sucked this year.

Ahh, the Not Invited Tournament! The Domers whined about not going to the NCAA and now they get run out of the loser tournament by a Patriot league team. Serves em' right!!!

That little rant will probably be my ticket to hell, being as I am Catholic
