Man killed while riding new motorcycle home from shop
A Montgomery County (TX) man is dead after crashing his brand-new motorcycle on the way home.
Police say the man was returning from the bike shop around 10:30 Monday night, when he lost control on a curve on FM 2090 near Daw Collins and slid into the path of an oncoming car. The driver was thrown into a ditch and died instantly. The other driver was not injured.
His brother had taken him to the bike shop and was following behind in a car when the wreck happened.
Police say its the second-time in two days Montgomery County motorcycle riders have been killed while driving their new cycles home.
Always good advice!
Aren't we all? :-)
I'll check back with pictures once I get the new ride!
Sounds like Montgomery County is in need of more riders attending MSF courses.
I think I read that deaths per million hours is 10 times higher for people on motorcycles than in cars. That's why I drive really defensive.
When I got my first bike, over 20 years ago, the shop made me ride a moped in the parking lot for an hour, then they made me ride a 250 for an hour before they would let me leave the lot with my new bike. I though it was funny at the time, but they said they wanted to make sure I could ride before they let me on the road.
The lower seat will allow you to put your feet down. The lower CG gives you more leverage. The added wt only matters if you're going to pick it up and toss it in the bed of your PU.
Aside from having to straddling 2 gyroscopes, dual exploding chambers under my crotch, a molotove cocktail case at my belly, bugs in my teeth, knees in the wind, hair all mussed up, havin to pay attention all the time and even shift gears, on top of that use turn signals while watching speed indicator dials, vibrating mirrors, road trash, 16 year olds trying to run you down and everyone from Nuns to Goths telling you to buy a muffler, get a hair cut, take a shave, change clothes, get gloves with fingers, trousers with a crotch, wear your helmet, liner, boots, chaps, jacket, gloves, goggles, sign your organ doner card, learn not to spit in the wind or try to muscle a mini-van, stay sober on the poker run, eat $10 worth of ribs to break even, drink but never ever get drunk, pay thousands of dollars for chrome do-dads that worked fine painted, go as fast as you can for a few minutes and consider it just a warm up and lastly dodge slow moving birds,,,
motorcycling is extremely relaxing.
<|:-)~~
Probably the only problem I'll have is helping my husband push it onto the trailer. I wouldn't be able to pick it up if I dropped it, but then I can't pick up the Sporty either. :-)
I think the Dyna may be winning. We're only talking about a 66 pound difference.
I once dropped it on a military base while I was still learning to ride and the guys fell all over themselves running over to help me pick it up. Being a chick has advantages!
Sandy, go with the Dyna! It'll be much more fun to ride than the Sporty. If you've already got some seat time on the Sportster, the transition to the Dyna shouldn't be too difficult. Spend a day or two practicing the low-speed parking lot stuff and getting used to the different braking characteristics.
The Dyna will be slightly heavier, however the lower center of gravity (compared to the Sportster) will offset that nicely. You'll probably have more issues with the longer wheelbase than the added weight. The Dyna will be much more comfortable, especially on the long haul. Plus, babes on Big Twins are really sexy . . .
I made the change from an FXRS to a big ole Ultra Classic bagger at the end of the riding season last year. It took me about 300 miles of mixed riding to get used to the different feel (and the 200 lbs additional weight).
Ride Safe! Kill a few bugs for me . . .
Thanks, BraveMan!
I want to go to Sturgis next year, and somehow going all that distance on a Sporty just didn't appeal to me!

On that point alone...you'll treasure that new Dyna!
You are so cool!
I didn't know you rode motorcycles too?
Wait....You drink White zin and ride motorcycles?
Curious!
PS... when I bought my newest airplane (Ruby) - I had my ex- fly it home for me and I learned to fly it in a friendly environment. You are making the right decision.
Good advice! Thanks.
Not simultaneously... :-)
If you make your first year of riding a motorcycle without getting creamed, you might have a chance.
