PS to this one, jonny: Where did you get that weird photo of Paula? I know she's always one brick short of a load, but she looks like The Joker meets Michael Jackson in that pic!

Glad I made you laugh. Just returning the favor :)

Where did you get that weird photo of Paula?

Heh-heh, I searched Google for a Paula pic to go along with the "standing-o". That was the closest match I could find :) It has to be 15 years old at least, about the same time that Jack Nicholson was playing The Joker in Batman, so your comparison is probably accurate :)

Personally, I like the charm and simplicity of her performances -- and yes, Simon, I even like Carrie's somewhat old-fashioned quality

Me too! I also appreciate her modesty, both in her personality and in the way she dresses. It somehow makes her even more attractive.

Fantasia did "Summertime" last year? Well, that explains why no one did it this year.

It was superb,
exquisitely sultry.
Probably the most memorable AI performance to date.

>Clay has the voice to do almost any Broadway musical.<

Agree. I saw a cellphone-acquired video clip of him singing "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" on Broadway for some fundraiser last year, with a Tony-nominated (winning?) actree. It was terrific.

You're right - as coachable as he is, I agree. Remember how awkward he used to be with *any* dance step? Some skilled dance coach got hom working, and he does just fine. Very comfortable on stage. At this point, his acting is certainly self-conscious, but it's earnest. :-)

WE LOVE FANTASIA IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY AND LOVES HOW SHE WORKS THE STAGE...SHE TAKES US TO CHURCH EVERYTIME NO MATTER WHAT SHE SINGS.

Don't you just love it when people claim to speak for everyone?

I have never seen American Idol so I guess you'd better remove me from the ping list. I like Stewie though.

Thanks,

I didn't catch that. It seems that the musical themes have been really lame. When do they start having guest judges and make everyone sing this judges songs? I can't remember form last year. I do remember that everyone really had trouble with the Elton John songs.

I'm waiting for that, too. Most of the musical categories so far have been too broad. I'd like to see (and hear) something more specific.

I don't know why she was in the bottom three this week

I think she's boring. (Vonzelle) Someone may have a good voice, but that doesn't make them pop star material.

Out of the contenders left, the one's who I look forward to hearing or seeing are Nadia, because she's always interesting; Carrie, because her crystal clear pure voice actually moves me; Constantine, because nobody likes him and he's so in love with himself and shameless that he's fun to watch.

I don't turn on Idol excited to see what Vonzelle is going to do. She's just like an extra in a movie, to me.

All three of those are more appealing that the last two winners.

I agree. Ruben, yuck. I always see him with a bib on eating baby food when I look at him.

Fantasia, over the top and grating, tacky-looking too. What happened to that other beautiful black woman with class who competed against Fantasia? I thought she had it all and should have won.

Kelly Clarkson, darling and great voice.

She was the best from last year, and I think she finished 4th. Most-talented, attractive, but I am not sure she had star-quality.

Yeah, it's a hoot. The kids over on the AI boards really slug it out over their favorites and the ones they don't like.

I sort of agree with you, except to say that Vonzell has probably shown the most growth and improvement of anyone who made it to the top 12.

It's interesting this year, because no one seems to have both an excellent voice and well-developed performing skills. Carrie far and away has the best natural voice, as well as beauty. But her performance skills are underdeveloped.

Of the boys, I think Anthony is in the same boat as Carrie. A fine natural voice, although less advanced that Carrie, but no performance skills whatsoever. Simon has always been too harsh with Anthony, because Simon never liked Clay and unfairly sees Anthony as another Clay.

Constantine and Bo are good performers who know how to work the stage and the crowd. But both have so-so voices. Nadia is the same way. So-so voice, but she's a charming performer.

Anwar and Scott are also-rans, because both their voices and performance skills are weaker than the others, in my opinion.

Thought you might be interested in this news item about Kelly Clarkson. Just passing it along as example of how it is possible for the truly talented AI contestants to make it big in the industry. The following is an article from Billboard.

April 07, 2005, 3:30 PM ET
EMI Signs Co-Pub Deal With Kelly Clarkson
By Susan Butler, N.Y.

EMI Music Publishing has landed a worldwide co-publishing deal with Kelly Clarkson.

Clarkson co-wrote six songs on her current RCA album "Breakaway," which has sold more than 1.8 million units in the U.S. since its release last November, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

She co-wrote the next single from the album, "Behind These Hazel Eyes," with Max Martin and Lukas "Dr. Luke" Gottwald. She has also collaborated with Kara DioGuardi, Chantal Kreviazuk, Raine Maide and others.

"Kelly is one of the most talented writers and performers on the music charts today," says EMI Music Publishing CEO/chairman Martin Bandier.

Clarkson's first album, "Thankful," was certified double-platinum. She is currently on tour through the end of May. (Actually, "Breakaway" also has been certified double-platinum as of last week's Billboard chart updates.)

The following is from the EMI website. (FYI, songwriters must go through publishing companies to market their songs to other artists.)

EMI is the world's largest music publisher in terms of copyrights owned, controlled or administered, with rights to more than one million musical compositions and offices in 30 countries. EMI's diverse repertoire includes numerous pop music hits, American standards, country songs, classical works, and motion picture and theatrical compositions including "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "New York, New York", and the rights to the film score of Singing in the Rain and the music in the Wizard of Oz. EMI concentrates on discovering, promoting and nurturing gifted songwriters around the world, working with new and established writers to build a body of work to be appreciated by future generations and making the music of yesterday relevant to the audience of today. EMI builds its music publishing business throughout the world by signing new songwriters, renewing existing contracts with songwriters and acquiring catalogues of existing compositions.

PS: Jonny, if Carrie wins this year, the best thing for her would be to use the first year under the AI contract as a learning and growth year. Then she should follow Clay and Kelly, and get the heck out from under that contract as soon as possible.
