Hi freepers. I need to know, for an assignment, what the Conservative Response was to Counter Culture in the 1960's. Any help would be deeply apreciated!!
Outside of hosing them down there was none until Ronald Reagan and then Rush.

Nixon's double election?
I am in my early 50's, but my memory of that period is fairly vivid. The conservative response to the counter culture of the60's was very tentative.
Barry Goldwater was the Republican nominee in 1964 against "the legend" JFK's successor Lyndon Johnson, the country perceived Kennedy and his successor Johnson as liberals, although they deepened our involvement in Viet Nam.
Johnson destroyed Goldwater in the election of 1964, the Beatles became the best rock group and first of its kind, with a counter culture theme, followed by many other musical groups. Conservatism was perceived as anti-progressive, out-of -the-mainstream, and even backwards. This pretty much remained the case till Johnson was overwhelmed by the escalation in Viet Nam, chose not to run in 1968, and the tide slowly began to turn. Nixon was elected ina close election, the counter culture still dominated, and helped drive Nixon from office. The media had it all its own way without any real challenge.
This trend carried into the 1970's, till Ronald Reagan came along, and implicitly and explicitly took the counter culture to task for being overly critical of American values and culture.
That was about it.

Don't forget that Nixon was re-elected in a landslide in 1972 against Mondull. Then he had his problems which put Gerald Ford in office who was not a strong conservative by any stretch. Then he pardoned Nixon which probably cost him the next election to the peanut farmer.
Well, on a personal level, for me it was things like disdain, contempt, dispisement, scorn, digust, being appalled, low-level hatred ... those kinds of things; the typical reactions of the adult, normal people around at the time.
The MSM define themselves by their alliance with the counter-culture so they only show that side. The movie 'Patton' (1972?)won the oscar during the heyday of the 60's counterculture (the '60's' didn't really start until about 63-64 and it ran right up until Nixon resigned). Other counter-counter culture events were the popularity of John Wayne and others right alongside the hippies. One of the reasons I am a Republican is that I saw how the Democrats aligned themselves with the anti-war low-lifes. I was raised Irish-Catholic and there was only one way to vote - Democrat! Since I didn't turn 18 until 1978 and I had already seen the light, I have NEVER turned a lever for a Democrat and I most likely never will.
The real coservative response came from Ronaldus Magnus. He had articles in the Readers Digest every couple months about rebuilding our military, and talks to Americans every Saturday around the time of the Paul Harvey broadcast and the American people warmed up to and believed him.

The Feminist movement was a lie. It was based on the idea that a career could emotionally substitute for a family. And it said that gender roles were 100 society, and that men and women were exactly the same because of conditioning. And that all housewives were Depressed.
I've got news for you, MOST WOMEN DID NOT WANT TO WORK BACK THEN!
How about, WE ALMOST WON VIETNAM. AND PEOPLE WERE SLAUGHTERED BECAUSE THE US PULLED OUT.

I am so glad to be around now, during the Conservative Revolution.
What was the conservative response? Well, I asked my dad about the 60s, and he said it was "just a bunch of kids hanging out and listening to music" and not the big "cultural Revolution" we think it is.
I'd say do a Google search on Phyllis Schlafly and the Eagle Forum. If you want the perfect counter to the Feminists, she's the one you'd want.
Past that, William F. Buckley might be worth researching if you need counters to other facets of Counterculturalism.
