ATLANTA (AP) - When he allegedly raped his ex-girlfriend over three days, Brian Nichols brought a cooler of food with him in case he got hungry, prosecutors said.

-snip-

Nichols had lived in Georgia since 1995. At an upscale condominium complex in Atlanta, neighbor Meg Armistead described him as a "nuisance" because he had a pit bull that he would occasionally let roam around the complex without a leash and because he took over the condominium's pool.

FUNERAL PROCESSION:

(DON'T SKIP THE PRAYER AT THE END...IT'S PRICELESS!)

A woman was leaving a convenience store with her morning coffee when she noticed a most unusual funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery. A long black hearse was followed by a second long black hearse about 50 feet behind the first one. Behind the second hearse was a solitary woman walking a pit bull on a leash. Behind her, a short distance back, were about 200 women walking single file.

The woman couldn't stand her curiosity. She respectfully approached the woman walking the dog and said, "I am so sorry for your loss, and I know now is a bad time to disturb you, but I've never seen a funeral like this.

Whose funeral is it?"

"My husband's."

"What happened to him?"

The woman replied, "My dog attacked and killed him."

She inquired further, "Well, who is in the second hearse?"

The woman answered, "My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my husband when the dog turned on her."

A poignant and thoughtful moment of silence passed between the two women.

"Can I borrow the dog?"

"Get in line."

A Woman's Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray for... Wisdom, to understand a man; Love, to forgive him and; Patience, for his moods. Because, Lord, if I pray for Strength .... I'll just beat him to death.

Lately? How about:

"What is it with pit bulls?" or

"What is it with the people who own pit bulls?"

I wonder how many times the cops search a suspect's house and find a Golden Retriever with a bandana around its neck?

It occurs to me that somewhere in this animal's history he had some firearms training. It is the only way to explain his perverse and evil "luck".

Like the SoCal Parrot asked, "...how many times the cops search a suspect's house and find a Golden Retriever with a bandana around its neck?" Why do you suppose that is? Two words: "canine profiling".

Pit bulls have a reputation that a poodle or golden retriever is never going to have. Why? Not simply because of the media, though that certainly is a factor. It is their size and their breeding. Generations of breeding have enhanced the qualities that have earned the pit bull its public notoriety.

I'm sure your dog is the nicest, sweetest, most gentle animal that has ever breathed air and you and it suffer the actions of, as you point out, the relative few percentage-wise that make their way into the news reports. For example, it will be more difficult for you to have home insurance because of your dog.

Insurance companies are among the most conservative risk takers. They recognize the potential of a dog that has for generations been bred for aggression and fighting strength and prowess. They are aware of how difficult it is to predict those moments when the situation will dictate that nature overcomes nurture and the animal becomes a product of its breeding rather than it upbringing.

You only need to be around a bird dog when it encounters birds to understand the power of breeding. Certainly, not all bird dogs are "birdie". Many are clueless. But it's not at all uncommon for a house dog that happens to be a bird dog to be transformed by the situation into revealing its genetic heritage.

Insurance companies know this and they look at the stats. Teenagers drivers, especially teenage males, have more accidents. Doesn't mean that there aren't good teenage male drivers, just that enough have problems to justify the insurance companies charging more. Same for many dogs, but especially true for pit bulls. Deal with it. Go here and see for yourself: http://www.dogbitelegalcenter.com/resources/dogbite-statistics.html

As a law student, do you imagine that if your dog ever caused anyone any grief, regardless of the reason, all of the above wouldn't be used against you? "...stereotyping the "people with pitbulls" doesn't appear to be the most informed statement...? Tell it to the jury. Or to the victim of a pit bull attack.
