Another effective squirrel deterrent (other than gunfire) is a cayenne-pepper powder that is mixed into the seed. Birds can't smell or taste it, but squirrels can. And so can I. Nasty stuff.
I put a hugh pile of seed treated with this stuff on the ground for the squirrels. The first squirrel took one whiff, and jumped backwards about three feet. The squirrels backed away from the seed as if it was radioactive, but the birds skarfed it down as usual.
Mmmmm.....cayenne powder.....
Hah! Does that really work? Its amazing that it doesn't affect the birds.
My Dad has problems with the squirrels making off with the suet blocks. He started wiring them up inside little bait cages (from the crab pots) but then he caught one of the squirrels working the wire hanger trying to take it off the little hook. Smart little devils.
cool tip, I did not know that. (but LSA did) sigh.
Reckon I could find a cayenne-pepper powder flavored suet?
