The Hobbit Hole XX - And take the hidden paths that run...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 03/05/2005 11:51:13 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And take the hidden paths that run...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I wasn't necessarily talking about politics, I was just talking about attitudes and condescencion, which I guess could be applied to profs in just about any discipline if they think theirs is the 'best'.

I wasn't necessarily talking about politics...

But Jen was.

Well, that's true.... there are good and bad teachers just like there are good and bad cops, programmers and secretaries. To be good at teaching something is an entirely different skill than to be good at doing something.

My most obnoxious prof in all of college was in flight engineering. He told graphic sex jokes that even the guys in class thought were more off-color than they thought funny.... the ones that are just gross. I was the only girl in class... and he'd say "I probably shouldn't tell this with Miss Hair in the room" before launching into it.

I don't know if he was trying to intimidate me, but I think he was. I'm no delicate flower. I didn't see it as a threat to my conscience, I just loathed him as a person.

I know, you both are talkin' about politics... I'm just bringin' in the mushy perspective of a person that lives in shades of gray.

I'm just bringin' in the mushy perspective of a person that lives in shades of gray.

Actually those mushy shades of gray are precisely the point. It's not all one way or the other.

As right as we may think we are in one area or another ~ politics, education, religion ~ we've got to understand that there are other perspectives out there. That doesn't mean we have to agree with them.

My church in DC was very focused on racial reconciliation. If I learned anything in the time there it was that I could look at something with my background as a southern white boy and say "that's not racist." But my African American friend could look at the same situation and say "Well, yes it is."

That's not a very conservative thing to say. I admit being pretty stubborn in my political, religious and other views...because I think I'm right.

But I will never grow until I realize that other people may see things differently. And that has to be a part of my world view.

Michael Jackson is trying the court's patience... he's late to court and a warrant has been issued for his arrest if he doesn't show up in the next hour.

Okay, I think it's safe to say that we can all agree that Michael Jackson is a freak!

I just think politics has lost it's luster... it's all 'my team or your team' without respect for the other side, only loathing and a desire to win... It's sortof like the religion wars but uglier.

To devolve into calling it right, wrong, evil, holy devolves the institution of politics IMHO....

This has NOTHING to do with your rant this morning, this comes from reading DU and FR on the same subjects. FR still has control of the high ground, in that at least the points are well thought out and well argued... much more than the level of dialogue at DU... but still...

I know I've said this before and I also know I'm not really smart enough or informed enough to say much...but I think a big reason why politics have gotten so ugly is because at this point they almost ARE about religion. Used to be they were more about views on economics and such...most people tended to agree more or less on morality.

Now, morality is a huge part of politics. It makes it about good and evil rather than just taxes and allotments and what-have-you.

Which one? ;-)

As far as it relating to the rant about the job, I do get awfully tired being in the middle of politics. At the same time, I can't quite get away from it.

Proverbs 26:11

;-)

I had to do all that by hand for an addition to our house a while back. It was a homeschooling project :D
Then I was the one that dealt with the inspector to get it all signed off after we built it. And people think homeschoolers are 'sheltered' and need 'socialization'. HA! That was way more relevant to life than spending all day in a room with people your own age.

In one sense, when you look at the War on Terror, it is about good vs. evil. There are those who have no desire to get along with us, they seek to destroy us.

But, I have friends who are wonderful Christians (and are far better scholars of the Word than I've ever been) who are Democrats and who are terrified of where George W. Bush is leading the country.

I know their lives so I don't, and can't, doubt their faith.

I just can't figure out how their brains work to bring them to those conclusions.

I just figured out that, at a rate of 3 movies per month, it will take me 12.7 years to view all the movies in my Netflix queue...

I know.... the Democrats like Lieberman are hated like McCain his hated by his own. The others that talk a show of strength like Hillary or Kerry lose because no one believes them. The right doesn't believe them, and the left only supports them because they don't really believe it either.

I think Kennedy wouldn't be a democrat today.

A lot of Christians have bought into the idea that 'peace on earth' is a something attainable and all should be sacrificed to work toward that. They have totally missed the clear messages in the Bible that humans have built in evil and true peace is not possible apart from God's kingdom. Yeah we want to try to work toward it but as soon as you start to think you really can achieve it somehow then you end up with some really skewed politics (like trying to ban all guns or make saying mean things illegal)

Not that you care probably but that is one of the nice things about anime. It is easier to find time to watch a 25 minute show than a 45 min (1 hour with commercials) or a movie.
