The Hobbit Hole XX - And take the hidden paths that run...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 03/05/2005 11:51:13 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And take the hidden paths that run...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Remember how Ruthy used to post those breakfast pics all the time? Once, she linked to some pictures that turned into porno instead when she posted them.

They were removed pretty quickly...

There saying 36,000 feet.

I showed SSQ the picture you'd posted. He said "Whoa!" We're fascinated with volcanos. One of the 'educational' channels, I think it was the History Channel, had a dramatization of the eruption of Vesuvius on a couple of weeks ago. It was fascinating because they took almost verbatim, the account of Pliny the Younger, and created a drama from it.

Along with that they used information discovered when they finally did the excavations in the early part of the century and found the impressions of the bodies of all the people from the town of Herculaneum, at the foot of Vesuvius. It was originally thought that they had escaped the danger, because there were no bodies in the town, but what they'd done was go down to the beach, and stay in the boathouses, hoping for rescue from the sea. They'd seen the boats of the Navy, led by Pliny the Elder, who had come from across the bay, but the boats were not able to put in at the shore because of the wind and smoke. These people were in the boathouses and on the beach when the pyroclastic flows from Vesuvius came down and engulfed them. Their forms, cast in the ash, were found when the excavations were done.

Later that same day that Pompeii and the other town were destroyed, Pliny the Elder was down on the beach on another part of the bay when a gas cloud from Vesuvius came over him and killed him. It was quite fascinating.

Never sung "O Sacred Head"?

I love that hymn. Another favorite, that doesn't seem like it would be suitable for Christmas, but it is, is "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence". Seems like a dirge, but the words are perfect for Christmas. I love the Gustav Holst arrangement for SATB.

I think I might have once seen the dramatization you speak of... it sounds almost ~familiar~

Not real good reporting here about where, if anywhere, there was a significant accumulation of ash this time... they are saying 'trace' in Ellensburg and Moses Lake where I went to school. You'd think they could go stand a reporter out there and show us. They stick reporters out in wind and snow that are less newsworthy!

Maybe it's for the best that there wasn't that much snow. Can you imagine the lahar that would come down the mountain from the combination of snowpack and pieces of the mountain sliding down?

We're doing a Tenebrae Service at Church this year, and the last hymn in the program is "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross"; very pretty.

I get strange enough looks in Church because I really sing out loud when I'm sitting in the congregation, the looks get even stranger when I break into harmony!!

That's one of my favorite hymns.

My top two favorites are "And Can it Be" and "It is Well with My Soul."

So I guess the part where the 250lb contralto soloist in 2.5inch pumps starts high-stepping in front of the choir and waving her free hand above her head is out, huh???

ROTFL!! That would send my very New England Parish into apoplexy! We had a black songwriter here a few years ago for our Lenten revival, and it was hilarious just watching these folks try to keep time to the music. I needled my friends, telling them they clapped like white people! ;o)
