Computer columnist who had been recommending Dell for cheap basic computers now unabashedly pumps Mac. Says it comes with great software including an Office-type suite.

Like the size.... However the best way to get a computer cheap is to build it yourself.

The article asks "could it make a 'switcher' out of [me]?" and answers itself affirmatively. A 'switcher' from a pentium-box? Maybe.

An 'upgrader' from my current Macintosh? Definitely not: I can buy a DUAL 1.8ghz G4 7447 processor upgrade for only a hundred dollars more for my "Mystic" from http://www.gigadesigns.com and still keep my multiple drives and PCI slots and internal zip drive and inexpensive 1.5gig RAM and gigabit ethernet and analog/digital audio input.

I think a lot of other current Macintosh owners would make out better from upgrades too - those that have the older 'big boxes'.
