This post reminds me of my dad, he was a great dog fancier even though we never had one. He would have known all these stats, even before the internet! He had a second job for quite a while logging registrations (or somesuch) for the AKC.
What are the dogs the Queen has? Our landlord had one and it seemed like a good dog, she (he?) got rather fat rather fast though.

I was surprised to see German shepherds at number three. I hardly ever see this breed anymore.

I'm surprised a ~little~ too... because they do seem rarer than that. I'm really surprised that Yorkies are so high on the list, higher even than the little poodles that are everywhere in over 60 parks ;~D
These are registered dogs... it's probably good to keep the perspective that there are a majority of dogs that are not registered, they are "some kind of lab mix" or "some kind of small terrier mix". So, with retriever types dominating the pack, German shepherds are the next-most registered of dogs.

My next store neighbor has a chocolate lab. She is one special animal. Abby is 11, and sometimes I swear she's human! :-)

The only dog I ever had was a Scottie, now deceased. I'd like to have something a little more docile next time around, and am thinking a Lab or Golden would fit the bill - although I'd also like to rescue a pup from the local animal shelter.

Don't limit yourself to pups, check out the rescue orgs. They have older dogs that are terrific!
