The only dog I ever had was a Scottie, now deceased. I'd like to have something a little more docile next time around, and am thinking a Lab or Golden would fit the bill - although I'd also like to rescue a pup from the local animal shelter.

Don't limit yourself to pups, check out the rescue orgs. They have older dogs that are terrific!

I have a ten year old Chocolate Lab now and I don't know if docile is a good description of the breed. They are incredibly gentle and loving, but many stay puppies forever. Don't get me wrong, she is well behaved and is a great listener, but she still thinks she's 8 months old. If you are looking for a dog that will love you and almost anybody you introduce her too, a Lab is a perfect choice.

A Female neutered Golden may be a little more gentle and less lively than a Lab...

If you're interested in a special breed, try the rescue societies for that breed.

We got Bubba from a lab rescue group.

One nice thing about it is that these dogs have all been fostered and the foster parents will tell you truthfully all the goods and bads. They won't try to gloss over any faults, because they want to place the dogs where they won't be returned.

They have plenty of Labs at the Shelter, unfortunately.
