The 50 Best Guy Movies Of All Time
MensJournal ^ | 12/04 | staff

Man cannot live by Cameron Diaz alone. Sometimes we need big guns, fast cars, dumb jokes, and huge explosions. You got a problem with that?

Culturally, guys often get the short end of the stick. Most books are bought by women, the music industry caters to teenagers, and when was the last time an art museum had an exhibit on nitro-burning funny cars? But the movies have always been good to us. The first feature film, 1904's The Great Train Robbery, was full of trains, guns, and chases -- guy friendly from start to finish. And Hollywood has been in our corner ever since.

But what makes a great guy film, and how did Men's Journal pick the best of all time? At first there were no hard and fast restrictions; we just knew one when we saw one. But over time basic criteria emerged. Violence trumps sex, war beats peace, and you better have a very good reason to oppose anything with Steve McQueen in it.

We believe that a true guy movie is a movie only a guy can love. A crucial distinction. Pop one into the DVD player and your wife or girlfriend should run screaming from the room. We frown upon films that are too serious or sensitive. The Deer Hunter got KO'd despite lengthy elk hunting and torture scenes because Meryl Streep was in it. Sure, she's a great actress, but rules are rules: no films with Meryl Streep. (snip)

1 DIRTY HARRY 1972

2 THE GODFATHER 1972

3 SCARFACE 1983

4 DIE HARD 1988

5 THE TERMINATOR 1984

6 THE ROAD WARRIOR 1981

7 THE DIRTY DOZEN 1967

8 THE MATRIX 1999

9 CADDYSHACK 1980

10 ROCKY 1976

Agreed. I think I saw that "nude" movie of hers. She didn't age well.

But then, neither have I.

I think she was 18, not 16. But a real beauty, nonetheless.

yep...should be on the list.

I'd love to just have the soundtrack...of the train station scene. Jack Elam...catching the fly in his gun barrel. The windmill...sound.

The line.."We only have three horses...we are short one". Bronson say's..."No. You have two too many"...

Great movie..!! Hands down..!!

FRegards,

And any list that does not include "The Unbearable Lightness of Being", with partially nude scenes of Lena Olin & Juliette Binoche ain't complete.

Ugh. Those were the ONLY good scenes in that interminable waste of time. Can't STAND Jeremy Irons.

I'm very sure she was-but I could be wrong (thanks,pissant)..I was watching the movie a few years back on TMC and the narrator said she was 16.My dear mother (the q-Tip) is 85 years young & loves her old movies, and she says she thinks she was 16.

Thunder Road and most other Robert Mitcham films.
It is the best bootlegger and car chase movie ever made.

Anything with Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, Mel Gibson, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Nicholas Cage, Bruce Willis, Steven Segal or anybody else who knows how to act like a man. Of course it should have lots of good action.

It was Daniel Day Lewis, not Jeremy Irons. Besides, you should have been looking at the chicks. I thought it was a good movie (and even better book).
