Add jalapeno slices and they're Texan. But we also eat them with chili. Sometimes with ketchup and mustard like folks who don't vote like we do.

There's a place in Pa, that deep fries the dogs in oil. There was a special on one of the Discovery networks that covered hot dogs from all around the country (90 min.). New York does dogs with 'kraut, mustard onions or relish; Chili dogs w/ cheese. Good luck. Try hitting them w/ Ital. sausage (grilled) w/peppers and onions.

Out here in mid-eastern PA & Western NJ:

Hot dog boiled in peanut oil. Mustard, onions and a pickle that's been quartered longways.

In N.Y.C.,it isn't a hot dog,unless it's served with deli mustard and sauerkraut;sometimes with the aforementioned plus pickle relish,but NOT the emerald green kind.And the hot dog is in a "natural" casing,which give it a "snap".

In Chicago,the bun must have poppy seeds on it and the dog is topped with a dill pickle,celery salt,tomatoes,mustard,and sometimes sauerkraut;a few places also place a hot pepper or two in the bun as well.

In New England,the bun is squarish and only mustard and/or ketchup is used and the bun is grilled,not steamed.

In Bermuda,mayonnaise (of all things) is the preferred topping.

Vermont doesn't have a signature hotdog that I know of but you could probably throw maple syrup on top of it (maybe mix it in the ketchup?) and call it the Vermont....

There's a place here that slices them lengthwise then puts ketchup and chili on them, in a bun. But that doesn't seem too New England-y. Maybe use baked beans instead? :lol: .

Well, it inst made with hot dogs, but my grandmother would stuff a hotdog bun with tuna salad, put cheese on top, and bake em. Those things were awesome...JFK

In Cincinnati they use smaller hot dogs, smother them with Cincy-style chili, mustard, onions and lots of shredded cheddar cheese. Skyline Chili and Goldstar Chili come to mind.

My favorite: Chicago style.

Grilled dog. Important to use Nathan's or something just as good.

Slightly toasted bun.

Sliced tomato, dill pickle, mustard and celery salt. All cut to size and fitted into the bun. Various peppers and relish to taste.

Here's a good one that I did for a joke at a party. It turned out to be outstanding: a brat on a standard whitebread hotdog bun with salsa and guacamole.

Here's my suggestion for Texas syle:

1. Toast the buns
2. Cook them on a grill. No boiled hot dogs, and all beef.
3. Hot dog on bun first, followed by chili with NO BEANS
4. Shredded longhorn colby cheese
5. Grilled onions
6. Yellow mustard (no Grey Poupon)
7. Dash of jalapenos
8. Curly fries on side, with ketchup for dipping (Del Monte, not Heinz)
9. Lone Star beer in a longneck that's been kept in an iced down cooler.
10. Serve next to lake with University of Texas coeds wearing bikinis

Did I leave anything out?

I watched a great program on PBS called "A Hot Dog Program". It featured distinct hot dogs from all over the country including Alaska. You can buy the VHS from them.

Georgia style.

The Varsity chili dogs made on North Avenue across the freeway from Ga. Tech. Hot dogs with a simple beef chili packed in them. No muss, no fuss. Oh, and an order of onion rings.

I thought you were looking for a recipe for actually making the hot dog itself, as in what type of meats. I was gonna say just to sweep up the lips and ars holes and grind 'em up.... :)

Mash a tablespoon of Navy beans for each Hot Dog

Spread bean mash on buns

Cover mash with grated cheese of choice (Cheddar or Colby is great)

Add Grilled Hot Dog or Kielbasa

Smother Dog in onions lightly sauteed in butter (onions should be firm)

Condiments to taste.
