All Year Long
[The Lord said], "Is this not the fast that I have chosen: . . . Is it not to share your bread with the hungry?" -Isaiah 58:6-7
During Lent (the 40 days prior to Easter) many Christians follow the practice of giving up something and taking the time to reflect on Jesus' sacrifice of Himself for us.
One group of middle-class believers in a church in the UK decided to live on the minimum wage. Their goal was to identify with those who live on little, to learn the joy of giving, to invite God to change their attitude toward money, and to challenge others in their church to do the same. For their study they chose Isaiah 58.
Afterward, one of the leaders of the group said they learned an important lesson. Living on less "makes you realize just how much you really can give away. It makes you look at what you normally give and realize that it is far from being sacrificial."
What they learned agrees with God's idea of what fasting and sacrificial living are all about. The Lord said to Israel, "Is this not the fast that I have chosen: . . . Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out?" (Isaiah 58:6-7). God was chiding His people because their fasting had become an empty ritual with no concern for others.
Let's give sacrificially to others-not just during Lent but all year long. -Anne Cetas
Grant us, then, the grace for giving
With a spirit large and free,
That our life and all our living
We may consecrate to Thee. -Murray
Your standard of giving is more important than your standard of living.

Sparkle and Shine
Spring is a time for friendships, for dressing up in style,
For celebrating Natures gifts for just a little while.
Its timing thats the issue, and sending out the signs,
Take time to smell the flowers while youre practicing your lines.
Weddings are in Summertime. Springs when the trap is set,
Though the quarry to be captured has not quite been sighted yet.
We will know him by his sparkle, and the shine upon his shoes,
And well have a private chuckle as he tries to then amuse.
Then hell think that he has charmed us, and hell smile a happy smile,
And hell come into the parlor just to chat a little while.
Then the spider-webs will tangle that he doesnt even see,
Hell be grateful that he spied her, and hell then forget to flee.

The Peace of Wild Things
by Wendell Berry, a Kentucky poet.
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief.
I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light.
For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

After enjoying a burger for lunch, how about this for dinner?

Savory Beef Ribeye Roast Ingredients:
· 1 beef ribeye roast, small end(about 4 pounds)
· 4 teaspoons garlic powder
· 1 tablespoon sweet paprika
· 1 teaspoon pepper
· 3/4 teaspoon salt
1. Heat oven to 350°F. Combine seasoning ingredients in a smallbowl, mix well. Rub seasoning mix onto beef roast.
2. Place roast, fat side up, on rack in shallow roasting pan. Insert ovenproof meat thermometer so tip is centered in thickest part of beef, not resting in fat. Do not add water or cover. Roast in 350°F oven 1-3/4 hours for medium rare; 2 hours for medium doneness.
3. Remove roast when meat thermometer registers 135°F for medium rare; 150°F for medium. Tent with foil. Let stand 15 to 20 minutes. (Temperature will continue to rise about 10°F to reach 145°F for medium rare; 160°F for medium.)
Carve roast. Serve with Balsamic Wild Mushroom Sauce.
Balsamic Wild Mushroom Sauce
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 package (4 ounces) assorted wild mushrooms, (such as baby portobello, shiitake and oyster), minced
- 4 large cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup dry red wine
- 1 can (14 to 14-1/2 ounces) ready-to-serve beef broth
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- Salt and pepper
- 1 tablespoon butter
1. Bring vinegar to a boil in medium saucepan. Reduce heat; simmer 8 to 9 minutes or until reduced to about 2 tablespoons (consistency will be syrupy). Remove from heat. Set aside to cool.
2. Heat oil in large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add mushrooms; cook and stir 5 to 8 minutes or until mushrooms are lightly browned. Add garlic; cook and stir an additional 2 minutes. Add wine; cook 3 to 5 minutes or until liquid has completely evaporated.
3. Meanwhile combine broth and cornstarch in small bowl, stirring until cornstarch is dissolved. Add balsamic reduction, broth mixture, salt and pepper, as desired, to skillet; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer 15 to 20 minutes or until mixture is reduced by one half.
Remove skillet from heat; add butter and stir until melted.
Makes about 1-1/4 cups.
