Is Chinese Take-out Fast Food? (Vanity Lent Query)
Lent | 02/13/05 | socal_parrot

Posted on 02/13/2005 7:31:37 PM PST by socal_parrot

Hi. I'm socal_parrot, and I'm a Lutheran (Hi, socal). I gave up fast food for Lent (a good chance to get right with the Lord and drop a couple lbs.). This evening, I went to a local strip mall and bought some Chinese take-out food for myself and the little woman. The restarurant was not a drive through. I actually had to park and walk in. The whole process took me 25 minutes. Would this be considered fast food? Have I kept my Lenten vow?

Do I need to lay prostrate in the snow?

For the record, I ordered Chicken Chow Mein, Won Ton Soup, Teriyaki Chicken and Egg Fried Rice.

I don't think Chinese food is considered "fast food," so I'm guessing you're in the clear. Unless you vowed to eliminate all "take-out" food. That would be another matter.

As a fellow Lutheran I gotta ask, how is giving up fast food gonna get you right with the Lord. And if you have to ask if Chinese take out is fast food.....

If you are asking our permission on it, you must feel guilty.

I don't know where you are located but in Florida, the strip-mall Chinese food takeout places make your order right then and there. I wouldn't call that style of cook-to-order food part of the fast food genre. But the real key is how you feel about it in your heart, what you intended when you made the commitment, and the fact that you now aren't sure. Your penance is to skip Chinese food until the end of lent. Oh, and ignore the fortunes in today's cookies.

My Pastor says that you actually don't need to give up anything for Lent. It's a time of reflection and re-dedication. I took this upon myself, as other members of the congregation do.

Twenty-five minutes and no drive-thru? I think you're in the clear.

I don't know if it is fast food or not but if you bought it in America, it is not really Chinese food. It is food that American's think is Chinese. Still a much better choice than a Big Mac or some other dead food.

Think about it ... what if they hit? Which direction would you look when you gave thanks, up or down? No, as your pseudo Internet pastor, those numbers would be for me, thank you very much. just kidding!

:) No, but Heaven help us, there are many with TV shows running still that would gladly offer that service.

So, if a hot dog floats in water, does that mean it can be considered fish???

Chinese Take-Out isn't fast food by any stretch.

Besides, it always takes them "ah--ten--min-ahts" for it to be ready when I call the order in.
