I need some help with CD drives (Vanity)
February 12, 2005
Posted on 02/12/2005 1:50:43 PM PST by Howlin
I put a music CD that came with a book into my computer last night, played, and now my computer won't recognize either my CD or my CD writer.
I've tried everything; Norton, Restore, rebooting.
Does anybody have any suggestions about what I might try now?

I like those green shrouds that Dell uses to quietly cool their processors and heat sinks. Dell is getting great cooling on the cheap while build it your self guys spend $45 on state of the art copper heat sinks. I saw a 120mm fan on an all copper heatsink for cooling Prescotts. Cost $50

I recommend that we put the unit back in operation and let it fail. It should then be a simple matter to track down the cause.
We can certainly afford to be out of communication for the short time it will take to replace it.

OK, but it is still unclear to me whether we have a real Hardware Problem or a Software problem........
If Windows wasn't so flaky, I would say we had a hardware problem....

AMD64 's at the low end don't require all that exotic cooling, Much better than the Athlon chips. And the Prescott.
Mostly run faster too.

Our gas bill last month for ONE month was 385.00 Damn, I had some high heating bills in Kansas City , but not that high, but that was before the higher NG prices.

AS I understand it....system as a whole runs....except for getting to the CD drive.....
Hmmm,, ... question we haven't asked...can we READ a CD....or does the problem only happen when she tries to write a CD???

Everything else works fine.
I cannot FIND the CD drives to do ANYTHING with them.
They're just not showing up, even thought XP says they found them both on restart.

Does this say you have two CD Devices?
Are they on the same cable, you may not know....if you have not had it opened.

I have a goofy method of sometimes fixing electronic devices that any layman can do,LOL.
Turn it off, pick up the front of the machine about a inch off the floor or table and drop it!
Restart as required and see if the darn thing doesn't fix its own self! LOL
This has actually worked. Hammers are optional.
There is also a warning of potential destruction, but it is part of repairing etiquette.:-)
