I need some help with CD drives (Vanity)
February 12, 2005
Posted on 02/12/2005 1:50:43 PM PST by Howlin
I put a music CD that came with a book into my computer last night, played, and now my computer won't recognize either my CD or my CD writer.
I've tried everything; Norton, Restore, rebooting.
Does anybody have any suggestions about what I might try now?

Don't understand half of what you guys are talking about but the lurking is fun. Can't wait to hear the outcome. Good luck Howlin!

If you want to try something quick, then reinstall the chipset drivers that came with your pc, they would be on your dell cd, or go to their website and download them and run the install program. This may get your drives back barring a hardware problem.
The chipset drivers are what enables xp to negotiate the ide controllers. You won't harm anything by reinstalling them.

I'm just back now........I have two of my grandchildren spending the night.
I've tried to fend them off all night; when I told them I was having computer problems, Max, 4 and a half, said "Maybe you just wore it out, Mimi."

Did you do a system restore?
You should be able to restore back to before your system got corrupted.

(besides, Dell will tell you to call Microsoft, adamantly asserting it's their problem!). I'll be damned if I am going to call MS and be put on hold, forced to listen to Neil Young songs for an hour.

I am only going to mess with the connector, right, not the power supply?

I am afraid I tried it a dozen times.
I actually reformatted and loaded SP-2 without any progs.
It drove me to drink.
I tried everything, processor drivers, chip set. The works.
SP-2 will not boot and it crashes as soon as the load begins. It is instantaneous to the load so it is in the very beginning of the code as the bios loads, or somewhere real close.

Goodnight, My Angel, A Lullabye -- Billy Joel.
I went to Dell and downloaded the Samsung CD writer thing; when I hit the .exe file, it said NO DEVICE FOUND.

I did four; I even tried going back to a date that I know I burned CDs on for sure. January 25th.

White, flat cable. No colored wire on it. The colored wires are the power supply wires and are not part of the ribbon cable.

"There are only 6 or 8 of us clustered around this....we CANNOT have Howlin out of action......"
I've just been following, since can be of no help. Heartily endorse your above comment!

Go to Fryes -- get a USB one for 75 bucks or whatever they cost these days.
Sounds like the thing is physically broke (based on what I have read in the thread).
