Pardon the ping, but I am getting desperate here!

I need to burn some CDs tonight and the computer can't "see" them!

DOes your computer still recognize the CDROM drive?
Try clicking, My computer--do you see your CD Drive listed?
If not, then run Hardware manager and reinstall it.
If you see your CD listed, then right click on My computer and select PROPERTIES, HARDWARE, Device Manager and scroll down to your drive, right click on it and check on the tabs, maybe you just need to reinstall the driver.

Definitely a hardware recognition problem. Your computer forgot you have a CDR. Or, it is not enabling it because the driver is corrupted or incorrect. Try rolling the driver back, an at the same time you will be able to see if the CDR is enabled and installed in the hardware directory.

It is in the control panel.

If not, remove it by deleting it in the system directory and allow the computer to find it again and reinstall on reboot. It may be having a resource conflict and it should sort it out by it's self. Recent additions to the system often cause this to occur and goofy drivers from Microsoft update can also cause this.

Happens all the time to me.

I'll ask Mr. Okie when he finishes napping. He's the computer geek here at the house.

Does anybody have any suggestions about what I might try now?

If you need to replace that CD burner, here is a new one that was just announced -

(Sorry, I couldn't resist. Good luck with your PC.)

It doesn't recognize it in My Computer; I'm running Windows XP; do I go to the Device Manager now?

Would help if you gave some specifics as to machine hardware, processor, maker, etc, and then major software specifics, and CD package that you are using to do the writing.

Oh, hey this is where we chant the mantra:

"Throw away your PC and buy a MAC"
"Dump windows and go with linux"
"Bill Gates is the anti-Christ".

yada yada yada

You got FR mail on a fix.

Were you using Media Player? My computer had a similar problem a few days ago, which was fixed when I downloaded a critical update that was for Media Player. If not, reinstall your cd burner, or the drivers for it. I am actually quite hopeless about this, but FReepers NCDave4Life and Prospero have walked me through so many crises that I sorta know what i'm doing. Also, unplugging the computer comletely and cold booting might be a good idea. Seems to work for me.

Do you have adequate backup for data and system?

AT some point someone will likely suggest to totally reformat and rebuild it all.

Not sure if you've tried this, but have you ejected the drive while the computer was booting? I had a similar problem where I tried to format a CD to be drag-and-drop compatible, but then didn't want to eject. I fixed it by opening the drive while WinXP was loading.

Yes! Delete it in the list and reboot.

it should already be flagged by a yellw exclamation mark. You may need your XP disk to reload drivers, or your CDR disk.

let me know what it does on reboot.

Windows XP Professional; Dell 8520;

When I ran ADD HARDWARE the CD drives have YELLOW exclamantion points next to them and say

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Dang, it must be an epidemic!!! Wish I could help, but I've been tearing my hair out for over a week. Switched from Earthlink to Verizon DSL, and it's been nothing but trouble.

I never know from one minute to the next whether or not I'm gonna get kicked off the 'Net.

Computers: they're the greatest thing in the world when they're working properly, but when they give you problems, it's worse than raising teenagers ;-)
