Why do you assume men with hairy armpits smell?

Growing up in Germany as an Army brat, I thought it was normal for women to also have hairy armpits.

Some may suggest that women that shave their armpits are shallow and slaves to the teachings Cosmo, Vague, and other fashion magazines.

Fact is... there is no proof that shaven or unshaven armpits make one smell better or worse.

Flamesuit is on and operational.

Sorry....got to disagree on this one.

After three years in Germany in the 70's, and many nights dancing w/furry-legged/-pitted German girls in clubs and discos (sad, but true), my experience is that they generally smell like perfumed draft animals.

Maybe just walking around, it's OK, but don't let them work up a sweat (or is that a "glow?).

Besides, she's only doing it to shock people so they'll talk about her and fulfill her insecure, narcissistic personality disorder.

She's just flaunting the norm to prove how "progressive" she is ("Hey everyone look at me!!!...Please..Please).

I guess when one become a substance abuser at 9 (before one's brain is even halfway developed), it manifests itself in bizarre behaviors later in life.

Not if you just bathed. But pit hair creates a better climate--warmer, moister--(and more surface area) to collect & trap body secretions & the growth of bacteria that feed on them.

That's true. It has to do with how much one bathes. Women with shaved arm pits can smell just as bad if they do not keep clean. It is strange that shaved arm pits and legs is such an ingrained thing in American culture. It hasn't been around that long really. It started around the early 1920's but one would think we have felt this way forever. I personally do not find it ascetically appealing therefor I shave. I guess it is just what you ate used to.

I find it interesting that no one ever talks about unshaven men as having bad hygiene. If a woman doesn't want to shave that's ok. It might be a little weird at first but it wouldn't kill me.

I think the blame goes to Gillette. They decided they could double their market for razor blades if they could get women to use them. A successful advertising campaign convinced women that shaved legs and pits were sexy. We are seeing the same thing today with depilatories being advertised for men – he denudes his chest and arms and a young attractive woman is all over him.

Good information on armpit hygiene, especially if you don't know already that hair traps sweat, which allows smelly bacteria to grow.

I don't shave my underarms. If that makes me in league with the filthy French then so be it. I don't read those magazines AT ALL. Spot on!

You don't see the irony of saying women don't shave aren't slaves to fashion magazines when Drew Barrymore (subject of story) was at an event for a fashion designer???

The 29-year- old Charlie's Angels star made her fashion statement at a New York catwalk event featuring designer Marc Jacobs.

I think it's personal decision if a woman wants to shave or not, but it is what is considered the norm in our society. I know that is not the case in Europe, but since it is the norm here it is always a bit shocking when women stop shaving.
