LONDON - Lucian Freud's painting of a naked and pregnant Kate Moss was sold at auction Wednesday for $7.29 million, and another Freud painting went for even more a record for the artist.
Christie's auction house said an anonymous telephone bidder bought the picture of the model, "Naked Portrait 2002," the centerpiece of its sale of postwar and contemporary art, for slightly more than its pre-sale estimate.
Another Freud painting, "Red Haired Man on a Chair," sold for $7.71 million, a record price for the artist at auction.
About 600 people packed the Christie's salesroom and spilled into an adjoining room, where some watched the fierce bidding on a television screen.
Sold by an anonymous private collector, the Moss picture shows the model pregnant with daughter Lila Grace, who is now 2.
"We are delighted with the results of the sale of the two works by Freud, painted exactly 40 years apart," said Christie's spokeswoman Catherine Manson. "They are stunning and highly sought-after."
Freud, 82, is considered one of Britain's greatest living artists, and is known for vast, mottled nudes of his friends and acquaintances. A grandson of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, he has also painted a fully clad Queen Elizabeth II.
Christie's said the near life-size portrait of a reclining Moss "is very rare in Freud's oeuvre for being one of only a few portraits the artist has painted of well-known or famous people."
LOL
P.S. Thanks to your tag, I now have the Talking Heads stuck in MY head.
Ay-yi-yi-yi-yi!
Yep. That's Kate but definitely not art. (imho)
That'd be Dire Straits!
Isn't that Dire Straits "Money For Nothing?"?
My bad, really bad.
Now I'm in Dire Straits because the Talking Heads are doing a cover of the tune in my head.
I guess I'll just blame it on being 44. (<8
BTW, I also thought Kate Moss was a supermodel (or something) five years ago!
She thought she was a supermodel too :>)
"She thought she was a supermodel too :>)"
Wasn't she involved with someone else famous when she was "hot"?
Was it Cobain? The heroin aspect rings a bell.
The headcold + Nyquil aspect is the only other thing ringing the rest of the bells in my mind. That and Dire Straits/Talking Heads.
Must...go...to...bed.
She was with Johnny Depp for a few years I think.
Sorry missed that...you get better FRiend.
Thanks shotokan on both counts.
It was Johnny Depp. I thought it was someone as equally thin at the time.
FReegards!
No actually you have this running through your head
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!
Not a very good painting IMHO. Ugly actually. The white triangles on each side are very distracting.
"No actually you have this running through your head

Burnin' down the house!
Ba-da-dum-boom!
Hey, you just gave me another 'ear worm.' Not a bad one though for a Friday night. :>)
If you think Burnin Down the House will stick in your head try: City of Dreams
Near where you are standing the Dinosaurs did a dance
The Indians told a story how it has come to pass
The Indians had a legend, the Spaniards lived for gold
White men came and killed them but they havent really gone
We live in the city of dreams
We drive on this highway of fire
Should we awake and find it gone, remember this our favorite town
From Germany and Europe and southern USA
They made this little town here that we live in to this day
The children of the white man saw Indians on TV
And heard about the legend how their city was a dream
We live in the city of dreams
We drive on this highway of fire
Should we awake and find it gone, remember this our favorite town
The Civil War is over and World War 1 & 2
If we can live together, the dream it might come true
Underneath the concrete the dream is still alive
A hundred million lifetimes a world that never dies
We live in the city of dreams
We drive on this highway of fire
Should we awake and find it gone, remember this our favorite town
We live in the city of dreams
We drive on this highway of fire
Should we awake and find it gone, remember this our favorite town
Had that one runnin through my head for three days. It was the closing theme in a movie. I can't remember the movie but I sure remember the song.
Hey wait a minute I think the movie was True Stories.
