Apple releases Mac OS X v10.3.8

 Technology - MacCentral

Apple on Wednesday posted Mac OS X (news - web sites) v10.3.8. The new version of the operating system is available for download directly from Apple's Web site as a 27.7MB file, and through the Software Update system preference pane. If you don't find it right away through Software Update, be patient, as its distribution is spreading.

According to Apple, key updates in this release include improved OpenGL technology and updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers; improved file sharing and directory services for mixed Mac and PC networks; improved compatibility for third party applications and devices; and previous standalone security updates.

The software is available for download from Apple's Web site either as a Delta Installer, suitable for updating systems running Mac OS X v10.3.7 to v10.3.8, or a Combo Installer, which can update any version of Mac OS X v10.3 to v10.3.8. Information posted to Apple's Web site provides more details about the enhancements made with Mac OS X v10.3.8:

Mac users of OSX should click on the Apple menu and select SOFTWARE UPDATE. Your system will automatically connect to Apple's update site and download and install the files necessary to update your system.

This update is for users of OSX.3 only.

It seems that this update is application enhancements only... there are no security issues being resolved in this update.

They fixed a wake-from-sleep issue with PowerBooks? Great. I'm getting one of those next month.

Although Apple updates are usually trouble free, I usually wait a day or two to install them in case they aren't.

http://www.macfixit.com will let you know pretty quickly if anyone's having any problems

Mac users of OSX should click on the Apple menu and select SOFTWARE UPDATE.

I think it's better to download the combo installer and burn it - then you can get back to a full-load quicker, if you have to do a reinstall, than reloading 10.3 and waiting to download the updater again (especially if you have a sucky download speed). Every time I do an updater download I end up passing it on to several people who DO have slow connections.

Anyways, I'll wait on an updater for 2-3 weeks and see how many howls it elicits as 'test subjects' start using it immediately (there are several sites that post new-OS bug finds).

Did I mis-hear somewhere that Tiger was going to be a G5-only OS?

I have not heard anything about this, but I would be surprised if it was G5 specific since they still make G4 machines.

You can find a prevue of Tiger here:

I imagine it would be possible for it not support G3's, although I haven't heard anything to that effect (and this laptop is a G3 which is still in heavy use so it's not going to be too happy if it's not supported :-)

Even if your G3 doesn't support Tiger, you can continue to use your present OS.

My wife still uses Jaguar on her G3 and she's satisfied with it.

Off the subject slightly (sorry)....is there a very small OS that I can download to have in case my WIN2K won't boot? And do I put it on the same C: drive?

(Guess you can tell I know very little about this stuff. :)
