There are currently many mechanical locking devices on the market to prevent guns from being fired. Also "smart gun" technology is emerging that manufacturer claim will provide fool proof safety.

Trigger lock

This lock is located between the back of the trigger and the trigger guard, and is
secured by a padlock. In will work on any gun.

Barrel locks

The rod lock is a metal rod that extends down the barrel of the gun, preventing bullets
from entering the firing chamber. It will work on selected guns.
The cable lock also extends down the barrel preventing the gun from being fired. It will work on any gun.

Detached Trigger lock

This clamshell-like device fits over the trigger mechanism preventing the gun from being fired. A key or a combination is required to unlock the device. It come in mechanical and electromechanical models This locks work on any gun.

Built in Trigger Lock

A small hollow hex key turns a shaft in the rear of the gun handle, locking and unlocking the trigger. The lock works on selected guns.

Magnetic hammer locks

Fulton arms, in Houston, says it will have a smart gun on the market soon that locks
and unlocks by reading a magnetic code similar to a magnetic strip on a credit card.

Chamber indicators

The idea behind the chamber indicator is to alert the user if a bullet is inside the chamber of the gun. Available on selected models.

Fingerprint Sensor

A sensor in the handle of the gun would obtain a fingerprint image from the hand holding the gun, allowing only the authorized user to fire the weapon. The gun will fire until the owner lets go of it, or until the weapon runs out of ammunition. A self-test circuit would verify the proper operation of the weapon.

Magnetic locks

An internal pin blocks the trigger from being fired while it is in locking position. A magnetic ring worn on the had deactivates that lock. I works on selected guns. A variation that prevents the hammer from moving works in revolvers and shotguns.

Radio Frequency Control

The gun user would wear a wristband that contains a small transmitter that would send a signal to a receiver in the handle, activating the gun. If the user forgets the wristband or the combination isn't recognized because of glove, the gun won't operate

Magazine Locks

The magazine lock is a combination lock on the pistol grip that prevents bullets from entering the firing chamber. Available on selected models.

I don't endorse or condemn this technology

OK.

I own several guns and none have trigger guards, nor any "smart technology".

The only "smarts" a gun needs are behind the hand that hold it.

There is a difference between "Stored" and "ready for use".

However, there are many people out there that are careless with their weapons when children may be around and parents not present.

You can never legislate common sense.

I'm a big fan of the Rubik's Lock where you have to get all four sides the same color to unlock it:
