*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*
Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
That's what I think too.
Is that the point of teaching a horse to park out, to lower the stirrup for easier mounting? I've always wondered about it.
Becky
I don't know. I wonder if it had an original function beyond just style.
Correct. And the white around the eye, can be due to a bald face. That does not mean, they have Appaloosa blood. The breed's characteristics are unique. Looking at Cindy's Sara Lee, I don't think, she is an Appaloosa. One never knows, what's lurking in that gene pool.
Not to say that there can't still be crop outs. Wapiti was a prime example. An Appaloosa out of two registered Quarter horses.
Will you be working at the Equine Affaire, or setting up a display?
There is a poster at my vets showing a dog and listing a bunch of breeds and at the end "mutt" I think Sarah Lees line wasn't choosy either:')
Speaking of characteristic traits cropping up, I don't know that I have ever mentioned something odd about my Old foundation breed quarter horse mare. She gaits when she gets nervous:) Several times I've had people ask what breed of walker is she. She doesn't do it well, it's very rough, but she does gait occasionially.

I would suspect the Dam had been messing around....
That would sure be a surpise:)
Becky
That's pretty cool.
Bay can Piaffe, ie, trot (or even canter) in place, when he's eager to get going on a ride.
Yes and no on the pretty cool.
1) I actually think it all ties in to what ever her problem is. Even when not being rode she has a funny stride. She always walks with short tiny strides. She has never, that I've see, taken a long strided steps.
2) Like I said, she does it when she's nervous and it is NOT smooth:), and it's very hard to post to. It will wear you out fast.
Becky
Oh, and that Piaffe thing, that is cool:), I had an Arab once that would do that. Like sitting in a rocking chair.
Becky
Mighty Bright's dam, Peggy's Delight was a crop out as was his sire, Bright Eyes Brother. Peggy's Delight was out of two quarter horses, Bright Eyes Brother was out of two quarter horses supposedly, however, dam was a paint.

What is her breeding?
If you could only get them to do it when they ~aren't~ just oever-excited.
It might have been a weird kind of jiggy five-beat that your mare would do. Bob was always complaining about the jiggy gait on his appy.... he said it was worse than if he'd just trot.
Dontcha wish you could get him to do it on command!
Tennessee can do a racking "passage" across a rough field at 10 to 15 mph when we're heading back towards home. I'm trying to keep his head going straight but his butt is pointed towards the barn.
She has some Leo in her. I can't remember the rest, and I don't have the papers here.
Becky
I've never "seen" her do what ever it is she does, I've always been on her:), but several people watching has said she is gaiting. Maybe it's not, but it isn't normal what ever it is.
Becky
You can find out about her lines (once you have her papers) and sometimes get pictures of ancestos at http://www.allbreedpedigree.com
