SP2 Woes!
Me | 01/30/05 | swampsniper

Installed SP2, I cannot access start menu, cannot even run a disc defrag. Computer is running fine, otherwise. I tried uninstall on SP2, still had the problem. Tried to run the XP disc for repair, it tells Me that the OS is more advanced. Do I need to wipe the whole thing clean, and start over?

Can you re-install SP2?

I installed SP2 on my home machines a couple of months ago, no prob and the company pushed SP2 down to all the machine in the company via SMS...not heard of this one.

Try pressing F8 during boot, and when you get to the startup choices menu, choose Safe Mode. Go through the boot, and shut the box down. Start it back up and see if it doesn't boot fine. If it does, go to the Microsoft Windows Update site and get all the latest patches.

The OS works fine, just can't do a reset on the start menu, or defrag the C disc.
I have tried the Mozilla stuff, but, since My big interest is in photography, nothing else works better than MS.
I reckon I am up to wiping the damn thing clean, and start from scratch.
It could easily be due to a bigtime case of dumbaxx on My part, I reckon it may be a gentic shortfall.
Thanks, All!

If your system uses an Nvidia chipset, SP2 has 'issues' with the Nvidia chipsets.

My father put SP2 on the project machine, and it turned system performance into, well, it made the machine a clone of the old Pentium 100's.

He got a clean install on it, but has yet to make that system 'fully operational' just yet.
He's still upset with SP2's quirks.

One of the biggest "problems" with SP2 is that if the system it is being installed on is hopelessly infected with viruses or spyware you will be totally screwed after applying it.

Best bet, however much of a pain it is, would be to reformat and start from scratch, install XP and then apply all the patches, up to SP2.

Windows is a house of cards. You have attempted to apply a sledge hammer fix to a house of cards with lots of evil drones in place of the necessary cards. Won't work.

It's actually a good thing, if this is what is happening, that your PC has blown up on you. God knows what those evil drones have been doing to you while resident on your PC.

Checked your credit rating lately?

I had to shut down and restart XP just to do a scandisk, I haven't tried to do a defrag... I was hoping to do that overnight tonight, but now... other than that, XP(SP2) has been working great.

I've got another problem and rather than starting a new thread may I borrow yours? I must have gotten a spy nasty on my system and I can't find it. Any time I type a word like modicum, document, cucumber, the 3 letters C-U-M end up underlined and become a link to porn. Just as the words sex and... you get the jist. I found an unknown media player installed a few days ago, my step daughters use the computer as well, but aren't supposed to download without my OK. Anyone else ever have this problem? I've run Adaware 6.0 and webroot's 'SPYSWEEPER" and they can't find anything. For me to do this manually... ughh...

Sypyware, spyware, spyware, spyware, spyware, spyware, spyware...or a virus. Clean it now. Clean it good.

I run McAfee, Spybot and Adware on my XP. When I downloaded the SP2 it screwed up so many programs and was an overall pain. I removed it and will never try it again.

Good luck to you.

I did remove it, but still couldn't access the management console. It is back in, and I am waiting for MS to respond to My report. Things are running OK, but sooner or later I will need to defrag.
I also run AVG, and Spybot, as well as BitDefender and Adaware. Also, Spyware Blaster. Only problem I've had lately is Wootbot showing up from somewhere, but it gets caught. I am tired of messing around, will just stay on MSs tail until I get an answer, if You are persistent it will happen.

I'll have to keep those in mind in the future. Thanks.

I managed to catch the little bugger manually, this time. I determined that it had to be connected to IE somehow, so I searched the IE folder and the internet add-ons and found a file called "hsrb.dll" since it had an unknown publisher and a different creation date than the IE files I disabled it then deleted it from the system32 folder. POOF! No more problem.
