Do you have a luggage rack? If not they also make cartop carriers that will strap on top. They're not too spendy. They make some now that are just oversized duffle bags on wheels, so when you get them down from the top of the van, you can roll them where you want them to go. When they're unloaded, you can fold them back down and put them in a closet or under a bed! Clothes and lighter weight items would be great in these cause they wouldn't be so heavy lifting up and back down. They hold quite a bit of stuff. Saves room to put the heavy stuff inside the van.

Heh...someone should post an image of the glyphs they used over the entrance to the Paths of the Dead.

Knowing my limitations, can y'all walk me through 1) what I should get and 2) the possiblity of building it myself.I recommend you buy it either new or refurbished. The major problem with building your own is that if a part fails (or you do something wrong) you have no technical support. Buying from a place like Dell (especially with Complete Care) gives you lots of support for a system in trouble.

Dell's customer service is great! I'll never buy a laptop from anyone but them again. But a desktop I can maintain myself.

I recommend you buy it either new or refurbished. Thanks. That seems to be the general wisdom. I'm definitely one to need technical support (as your dear wife knows).
I'll start looking around. Once I steal some money or we sell Nana, I'll be back with more questions on what to buy.

How about a compromise? Buy a system with a little less RAM than you really want, then upgrade the RAM and video card if need be in six months. Get a cd burner now, then add a dvd burner later.

hmmmmm...that's a thought. I'd have to have you guys walk me through it tho.
But, it's not even a remote possibility until I get the taxes finished. And maybe not even then.

Dad did that for the plane but it looks like the site is gone since they changed ISP's. It was a pretty good site with pictures of almost every step of the way. He had it in the basement all the way down to nothing but metal tubes and all the way back up to a flying plane.
This picture is of it after the rebuild:

I will have to urge him to get that site back up again.

RAM is actually pretty easy to add. And drives ain't that bad either, plus you can always get an external drive connecting by USB if you're willing to spend a bit more.

I would say buy with as "Buy a system with as little RAM as possible and upgrade it right away to a healthy amount from some place really cheap, then upgrade the video card if need be in six months."
Windows XP really LOVES ram. I never thought I needed much more but when I finally upgraded it recently it was like I had bought a whole new faster machine. Buy the minimum amount of ram it comes with because the computer manufacturer will over price that. Then up it to at least something over 512mg right away.
