Browser Info -Mozilla Firefox not compatible with Yahoo Game Channel
1-23-05

Posted on 01/23/2005 10:03:35 AM PST by STARWISE

I've been using Mozilla's Firefox browser all week, and it's GREAT... and it's FREE! I love it and recommend it highly. My pop-ups, freezing and general computer problems have pretty much disappeared. Mozilla

I like having the Yahoo Game Channel up for NFL games. You get the stats, and within seconds, the current play. Just went there and here's the message:

"In order to use the new NFL GameChannel, users will need Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher and a Windows operating system. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, you can check out our NFL scoreboard instead."

From a CNET review of Firefox:

"While Mozilla offers a whole suite of secure, independent, open-source Internet tools, it recently streamlined its browser component and named it Firefox. Since last summer, we've been testing Firefox, and, frankly, we're sold: Firefox is just as fast and just as easy as Internet Explorer--and more importantly, it's much more secure.

And feature by feature, Firefox either matches or surpasses IE."

IE Continues to Lose Grip on Market

Study shows Firefox, Opera, Safari browsers gaining momentum against dominant product.

Microsoft's share of the browser market has continued to slide, according to a new study, indicating a continued momentum for users switching to Internet Explorer alternatives.

Between the beginning of December and mid-January, IE's market share dropped 1.5 percent to 90.3 percent, while the Mozilla Project's Firefox browser rose 0.9 percent to a total of 5.0 percent, according to market researcher WebSideStory."

Didn't know there Yahoo had such a tight relationship with the Microsoft empire ..I hope they expand their reach, 'cause Firefox is great, and they're adding new sensible features all the time. What I get from IE is continuing problems, computer freezing and re-booting, more annoying pop-ups and security vulnerabilites, and continuing updates to patch their glitches and security loopholes.

Looks like Firefox's ultimate success will be based on their ability to link up with popular websites and programs. No Game Channel for me today.

What? I can't use my browser to go to the Yahoo game channel and follow 382 games played by 300 pound criminals earning millions of dollars?

Damn.

That does it. Out go all my software and damned computers and...

Wait.
I don't do professional sports.

never mind

Try this - User Agent Switcher extension for Firefox.

It installs to the Tools menu on Firefox, and you just have the browser tell Yahoo "ok - I'm IE6 today..."

I just went to the Stats page and didn't get the message you had, but I'm not sure I'm on the section you were trying to get in to.

On the other hand, maybe you do something that would benefit from the informative post immediately following your waste-of-bandwidth post.

My local news-rag's E-edition is not Firefox compatible. After many complaints from me ... nothing. They're not responsible for incompatible browsers. So much for standard protocols. will we have to have a conservative WWW and use Chttp:?

On a similar note Yahoo mail and Hotmail doesn't allow FF all the editing functions, and this extension helps remedy it. (It doesn't do smilies):

After many complaints from me ... nothing.

If the site has something of value, I usually send them a link to the most recent news article regarding MSIEs' decreasing use, and the corresponding increase in use of Mozilla, Firefox and/or Opera.

By creating IE-only sites, they risk alienating the millions of potential visitors, who do not, and will not, use MSIE.

Wal-Mart music down loads are a bargain at 88 cents per but they lost me when I switched to fire fox. They say I must use IE.

Some people just don't understand the point of the Internet.

Two that I have found:

FF won't play the regional radar at Intellicast. It does play the national radar.
FF won't play solitaire at Idiot's Delight. It is the best solitaire game on the internet.

I use IE for those.

Yahoo! has a lot to learn. Soon. Their ads are absolutely gaudy, they lean left, and now they've made the 'Personals' link on their home page pink, like it's been visited -- "No, honey, I really haven't been there. Really." So, their not recognizing today's Mozilla/FF evolution isn't surprising.

Haven't seen that part of Yahoo .. that's very tawdry. I do like them better than Google .. just for the front page for Yellow Pages, People Search .. wish Google would make their front page more content-rich and easy to use like Yahoo.
