My Computer Has a Virus---Turns off by itself! (Can someone help)

Can anyone help me? I have a computer here (My brothers actually) that constantly turns on and off by itself. Sometimes it doesn't even let you boot up until the 4th or 5th self-rebooting....it tries and then starts over and over again.
I remember not too long ago a virus did this and was hoping someone in here could tell me what virus did that....and how I can fix it? It won't let you get online either.....
No...he did not have a firewall and let Norton expire......I yelled at him already.... :)

Tape something over the power button.. you know..
some chewed gum, a beer cap, a bandaid. It's rookie knowledge.
I have somebody's University of Texas ring taped over mine.

CAn I download that to a floppy? That is all I have in common with this machine and I need to transfer info since it doesn't seem to let me online......although I haven't tried with my dial AOL yet :) (No comments please on the AOL....I already know....)

Noooooo! Don't go into the registry and remove anything or it can hose your system and you'll be stuck reinstalling. If you have a virus, a removal tool is best.

That message is related to your networking. It doesn't necessarily cause a problem. When it says a user is still connected, it's because file sharing is enabled - the user that's connected could be the system itself!
To eliminate this message, you can turn off file sharing.

Most likey he has at least one virus or Trojan if not more. He is going to have to get a anti-virus program, perhaps he can boot up in Safe-Mode and attack it that way.
I don't recall the name of that particular virus, but I do remember that you needed the latest patches for Windows so it so make sure he gets all the patches he needs to bring his OS up to speed.
Worst case scenario, reformat the drive.

AdAware and SpySweeper are two of the best I've come across. Not familiar with Spyware Zapper.

EXCELLENT suggestion. Try this.
Assuming Windows...
Go to Start> Run and type "shutdown -r" (no " marks) and click "ok". This will prevent your machine from shutting itself down while you try to solve the real problem (the virus).

I've been in BIOS before....as long as I know what I'm changing, I'm fine with it..... I took the A+ class, but didn't take the exam...

I agree with the gut-consensus - power supply. Go to CompUSA or some equivalent and get a 400W or better - worst case, you have a spare IF that wasn't the problem - but someday you'll need it.

If it's the power supply, the virus fix won't work. Try the virus fix first to see if it fixes the problem, and if not, look at the ps next.

Not true. A lot of viruses launch from the registry and booting to a floppy will not get around the problem.That's true if you make an emergency disk for windows. In this case I would use a boot disk made for linux just to ensure it wasn't a hardware prblem. Norton rescue disks should help if there isn't a hardware problem.
