The living room window is large, and east facing, but is shaded by a large redwood tree. However, the dining room windows face south, and aren't very well shaded by vegetation. Those windows aren't large, either. They are long and narrow. It's the living room window that is quite large.
I'm redoing a South facing room. I went with orange walls. LOL. It's called carmel cream. I truly love it. The floors are concrete and I am having them painted dark brown. The ceiling is interesting in there, with exposed beams, etc. All of that is an off white and so is the trim.
I think it might turn out to be one of my favorite rooms.
You know what I do? I borrow things from the stores, bring it home, live with it a few days, then decide. I might ask for a few shutters, in different colors, prop them up and see what I think. You could also get a plain white shutter, several cans of stain and have a ball. Just paint wide stripes of stain and see how it fits with your room.
It sounds very interesting! And Carmel Cream doesn't sound like orange!
I'm planning on painting the walls some kind of neutral shade, a light one, just to add some interest. They're just plain old white right now, but I haven't picked out anything yet.
Oh my gosh. Look at this house. :)

Have you noticed that linen finish? They say it's easy to do and gives a good textured look to walls.
LOL. I know it doesn't sound orange, but it is. :) I like the way the light plays with it. Different times of the day, it looks almost gold. It's interesting.
Here's another one. :)

Nope, haven't seen the linen finish. I'll have to check it out.
If you have dark wood floors, color on the walls (even med. neutral) will be easier on the eyes than white. It knocks out the stark contrast, and your eyes don't have to readjust as much when you look around the room.
It's also good to put beautifully detailed wood furniture near a wall that doesn't have too strong of a brightness difference -- that way your eyes can see the details better.
Wow! I wonder how much a place like (with 46 acres, no less) would go for here in the bay area. Property is so high here - an acre in a residential area can go for over a million bucks.
It's just pouring rain here. Think I'll go find a book, if I can't out do Bess and get out for awhile. :)
I enjoyed talking with you, as always.
I'll be painting - I just can't stand the white. I've painted the master bathroom a nice celadon green, and it is so fresh looking. The trim is a slightly off white, the floors are a neutral travertine natural stone. It really looks great.
You use something like a grooming comb. The paint goes on the wall in one direction, dries, then you go over it again in the opposite direction. Sounds complicated but they say it isn't.
There is no telling what that house would cost in California. It's so big we could all live in it. :)
Yea, we have the color expert on board. I love what you do with colors. You see them with an artist eye.
I think I saw something like that in a texturizing paing brochure! I might do that if I think I have the time. Maybe.
I feel certain you did. It seems to be real popular right now. Gives a finished look, I think.
I asked about that roof because so many people are going metal now. Everybody I've talked with, loves them.
LOL. I really am gone now. See you guys later. :)
Same here. It has just been dreadful and dreary. It snowed some yesterday, but it was gone before noon. Now it's just cold and yucky. It's been this wasy for days.
