I got the chore of helping my granddaughter with her homework this afternoon. Oh joy! She has just completed first semester of first grade.

This was one of the questions:

Elise used 6 green blocks and 2 orange blocks to make a design. She took off 1 green block. Draw a picture to show how many green blocks are in her design now.

Okay, so what happened to the damn orange blocks? grrrr But, she got it correct.

But, this question stumped her:

How many dimes and pennies will you need to buy a notebook that costs 63 cents?

She knows that there are ten pennies in a dime, but I could not explain how without doing division. And they are not even into that yet. What is wrong with these teachers? Okay, so I cheated and just gave her the answer.

LOL

I just discovered that when your cat runs up after you've been hurt it isn't due to concern for you.
It's because they want to see if you're hurt enough for them to take down.

It looks like the "new math" my sister encountered as the youngest child in our family.

She is a cut throat poker player...but still has to count up her cards on her fingers..under the table.

"It was in the low 50's when I took that"

It got in the 70's here today, and it was nice and sunny too. What a pleasant change.

Perhaps Dawn is more conservative than I thought. All she had was a slit up the leg, and the dress wasn't even low cut.

"She knows that there are ten pennies in a dime, but I could not explain how without doing division. And they are not even into that yet. What is wrong with these teachers?"

One of my foster kids asked me to go with her to the coke machine the other day because she had trouble counting money. She had a bunch of change and couldn't figure out how to count out 40 cents. I ended up trying to give her a math lesson, and she never could figure it out, by adding one amount to another. This kid is nearly 12. After she got her coke, I accidentally dropped a quarter on the floor and she made a joke about how I couldn't even hold on to it. I said to her, "maybe not, but at least I know how much is there." She was quick to get indignant that I was "making fun of her." I told her I wasn't making fun, just making a point. They can't learn stuff that they really need to know, but it sure doesn't take them long to learn when someone else is being "insensitive."
