Ian is still an idiot. I disagree, at least with respect to waiting almost 12 hours. I think he made a calculated choice that restoring his honor and integrity (in the eyes of Tom, in particular, who seems to have become a bit of a father figure for him) was worth more than a million dollars. Personally, I think it admirable, especially in light of Jeff's comments in Entertainment Weekly that Colby sticking with Tina (I think it was) in Survivor: Australia was the only honorable decision that he ever saw on the show at the end like that. My only caveat is that I don't think Katey was worth his respect since she was just playing for herself. For her, the honorable thing to do would have been to decline Ian's offer and step down and tell Tom to pick Ian. She didn't do that. But I don't hold that against Ian. I hold that against her.

You miss the point. He could have done that within the first five minutes, or if you are splitting hairs, five minutes after Katie quit. Forgetting for a moment that he gave his betrayal away (stoopid), what was really going on is that after almost 12 hours he figured out that he could do a "noble" thing and win back respect if he gave up the challenge. Funny how the more time passed the more inclined he was to be noble, Something he could have done at least six hours earlier.
Nope, he lost his will and gave up the challenge under the guise of being noble.
Idiot.

I tend to agree with your thoughts - but I'd like to toss in my two cents...
Third place is 85,000
Second place is 100,000
Ian already won the the car; in terms of prize share, he was still ahead of Katie. Had he hung in there and actually made it to the final two, all he could look forward to was 15,000 more in prize money.
By making the deal he did (they call that a deal?) he probably gave himself ten times that in extra salary with Sea World over the next few years. I can just see his noble sacrifice television commercials next time Sea World gets caught doing something stupid.
Oh, and he also assured himself one heck of a great dating position.. 'Aww, how sweet.. he gave up the win so his friends could get ahead.' I bet there are a lot of women lining up to date this guy.
