I tend to agree with your thoughts - but I'd like to toss in my two cents...

Third place is 85,000
Second place is 100,000

Ian already won the the car; in terms of prize share, he was still ahead of Katie. Had he hung in there and actually made it to the final two, all he could look forward to was 15,000 more in prize money.

By making the deal he did (they call that a deal?) he probably gave himself ten times that in extra salary with Sea World over the next few years. I can just see his noble sacrifice television commercials next time Sea World gets caught doing something stupid.

Oh, and he also assured himself one heck of a great dating position.. 'Aww, how sweet.. he gave up the win so his friends could get ahead.' I bet there are a lot of women lining up to date this guy.

I didn't know that 3rd place got $.

When Tom was on the pole, ready to accept Ian's offer, he said to Ian that he would be forfeiting $100,000. He said that's not chump change and could pay for his college.

Where did you hear that 3rd gets $85,000?

I disagree. I think he had an excellent chance of beating Katie, even if Tom voted against him. The fact that Katie got a single vote at the end suggests just how unliked she was and Ian would have gotten the "anyone but Katie" vote. What makes you think he wouldn't have won the million? In fact, I think he was probably the only person who might have beaten Tom in the final two had he taken Tom's deal.
