With some time on my hands today I caught the flick "White Noise." The critics hated it. They are wrong. It's a tight, scary, fast-moving film with a lot of surprises.
I have no connection with the film and just wanted to set the record straight, especially after seeing part of the "Golden Globes" show last night, at which European critics (hah!) wet themselves over some really terrible films.
We need to start licensing movie critics! How much longer can this epidemic of bad reviews go unchecked?? We owe it to the children!
A silent film with nothing but stills of her would have been a vast improvement.
I'd like to put in a word for the critics. Their job isn't as easy as it sounds, since everyone has a different reaction to art, and they have to take that into account. There are plenty of great movies that have been panned, and a few terrible movies that get rave reviews... but more often than not I agree with the reviews. If you generally love movies the critics hate (someone on this thread mentioned "van helsing" and "league of extraordinary gentlemen), perhaps you just have "bad taste" in movies. I thought both of those movies were terrible. Terribly written, terribly put together, derivative, unorginal and boring. I'm glad the critics told me so. If you disagree, and enjoy bad movies, more power to you: You're in luck, since the vast majority of films coming out of Hollywood today are terrible.
What I'd really like to see is a high-quality action movie with a sense of humor: When was the last movie that could hold a candle to "Die Hard" made?
Where I come from everyone knows that if the local movie critic hates it, you go see it, and vice versa.
Action movies seem to be a lost art because of CGI which is replacing the art of filming action scenes. Something like Van Helsing is a perfect example. James Cameron is one of the last who knows how to do it. And he hasn't made a feature in 8 years.
You do have to wonder about movies where all the critics agree that it is bad.
Hubby and I saw Aviator and liked it. We also just rented Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It was very different, and we liked it.
This year, we're not watching as many movies. We're actually liking some things on TV. 24 is looking good, and we really like the new Battlestar Gallactica series. We both think Desparate Housewives is funny. I'm intrigued with Lost, but my husband is getting bored with it.
"Saw Dances with Wolves for the first time in i dont know how many years on A&E the other day."
Dances with Wolves is "Out of Africa" II . Total rip off including the score. Kostner must have done that one on the back of an envelope. I liked both films.
So turn the sound off on the DVD. I liked the movie, and not just for her.
I would drink her bath water for a week just to get a glimpse.
Hmm... Guess they didn't want their pics linked.
That's embarrasing! I guess that's what the Preview is for.
You sited six movies.
There were at least 200 movies last year. Unfortunately, 2004 was a pretty bland year for movies and there were very few movies I or the critics felt passionately enough about to show some contrast.
But here are a few examples:
Big Fish. One of my favorites. They panned.
Birth. They liked, I didn't.
The Big Bounce. I liked, they didn't.
F911. No comment necessary.
Code 46. I hated, they loved.
Day After Tomorrow. Terrible movie. They liked.
The Forgotten. I loved it. They didn't.
The Girl Next Door. I loved it. They didn't.
I Heart the Huckabees. Awful. They loved it.
Kinsey. Mega Awful, sickening, disgusting. They loved it.
The Life Aquatic. Terrible. They loved it.
The Machinist. Wonderful. They didn't agree.
Man On Fire. Terrific. They hated it.
The Passion of the Christ. No comment necessary.
Van Helsing. I liked it. They didn't.
Wicker Park. Very cool movie. Critics panned it.
This is not a very convincing list, I admit. As I said, most of the movies this year were too mediocre to show much contrast.
I believe they make individual security devices. :)
BTW.. Watched The Village this weekend. Yawn
I simply can't get in to M. Night's films.
I (probably the only one) didn't like Sixth Sense or Unbreakable, boring. Signs was ok.
Following the tradition, The Village bored me and my wife to the point we almost stopped the DVD. Since it had cost us $3.95 to rent , we stuck it out.
Unfortunate Events was extremely cool.
The most torturous movie I ever sat through was the first movie of the The Ring (?)....that series...I forgot the name of the first one. My sister and I were out of our minds bored but sat through to the disappointing ending.
You know what's scary? The guy that plays Freakshow is the actor from law and Order SVU, Christopher Meloni! Freakshow is quite a departure from that serious role! LOL!

"I don't care about critic's opinions anyway. Two of the most enjoyable movie experiences I've had over the past couple of years have been VAN HELSING and LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN."
Unbearable! Critics right!
