That's the problem with us Americans, we don't go for regular checkups, many cancers can be cut out very easily before it spreads, a simple cuff on the arm can detect hypertension which kills the kidneys, and a SMAC-23 blood test is most likely where a doctor would detect kidney disease along with a urinalysis. I think the article is pointing out that it's a silent disease w/o many obvious symptoms so it would be prudent to go get an annual physical.
