After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)
Becky, I finished my landscaping in the front, or at least as much as I'm going to do this year. I thought the remainder of it would take me a couple of hours, and instead it took me most of the day. And I'm feeling it in every muscle! But it's starting to come together. I basically redid the entire front yard from scratch. As things grow in a little bit more, I'll take some pictures and post them.
Here is some recent ones of mine.
MY red bud tree is getting out of control again:)
You know when I first planted it 3 years ago it was only as tall as the fence.
The other day I had a visitor to my garden

Your second picture reminded me that I still need to get the birdbath out.
I saw a fountain at Wal Mart this spring that I'd like to get rather then the birdbath. 1. In 3 years I've only seen birds use it 1 time. 2. It's just a good breeding ground for skeeters. I think if you have moving water the mosquitoes don't grow in it. I'll put the birdbath farther from the house.

Speaking of Florida, I finally got around to finishing off a roll of film and getting it developed. Here are some shots from our trip ...
First, the view from my brother-in-law's (Frank) house that pegleg mentioned. This was early one morning during our visit. The town Frank and his family live in is on an island in the St. John's river. This is looking east from his patio ...
Here's a shot of Grace and Hannah jumping on a trampoline in Frank's back yard ...
And finally, a shot of the al_c family and some old guy that crashed Frank's house one evening ...
Yeah, that's pegleg, aka Max.
Great pictures, Al! Thanks for sharing them. Your girls are adorable! What are their ages now?
Grace is 3, Hannah is 4.
Sarah got her first giant harvest of lightning bugs on Friday. She must have caught 20 of them in about 10 minutes.

Your beautiful little girls have really grown:')
We don't have fireants, and tarantulas are good to have around. They eat wasps, and we have lots of wasps, they chase my hummingbirds away:(.
I don't really "like" seeing those spiders, but I don't run screaming the other way any more. That one did seem to be a pretty big one for around here.

In the office of freshman Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, lobbyists burst into tears Tuesday when they heard bad news about prospects for a bill they were pushing. That extraordinary reaction can be explained by the fact that the ''lobbyists'' were children.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation sent groups of children, some as young as 5, to lobby senators for federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. The children were in Washington to attend the foundation's Children's Congress. In order for any child to attend, each parent had to promise, in writing, support for the organization's stem cell research position.
The sobbing in DeMint's office came after a lengthy explanation by the senator's aides of why he opposes killing human embryos for research purposes. Another freshman Republican, Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, avoided dramatics by coming out of his inner office and giving the children a simple ''No.''

Who in their right mind would send a five year old in to 'lobby' a senator? 'Despicable' is most apt.

I do know that it would be impossible for me, under any circumstances, to justify the creation and subsequent destruction of life. The health and life of no person on earth justifies the killing of another life. I can see no exceptions.
When is a stem cell considered "adult"? How is it (they) harvested? Is it what remains after the birth of a child? Is it what remains after a miscarriage? Can they harvest stem cells from a really old "adult" like me?
In any or all of the above circumstances I wonder why the entire scientific community doesn't exhaust all research in this area until any single one of them would consider creating life only to destroy it for any supposed "greater good".
