The Neverending Story

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)

Not being on the "religious" forum anymore we don't get the drive-bys like we used to. :-)

LOL, Drive-bys, I like it!

Myron Cope retires. End of an era in Steelers' broadcasting.
The Boston Celtics had a radio broadcaster (Johnny Most) years ago who was the prototype for Myron Cope.

Both were homers. Both were imaginative. Both had terrible radio voices. Both were one of a kind. And both were excellent.

It's just a shame that the Patriots ruined a final Super Bowl trip for him. Oh well.

Wisely, the Steelers aren't even going to try to replace him. They'll go with a 2 man team for this season. I'll still be tuning in, but it won't be the same. Wait until Halloween. They've designated the Monday night game against the Ravens as Myron Cope night. It should be a madhouse.

Cope quipped that with all the writing (he wrote about boxing and other sports for SI and others in the 60s) and other work he's done, when he dies they'll be a little blurb in every major paper "Inventor of Towel Dies."

LOL. Myron liked to have a "toddy" with the players once in a while. But, I can't imagine Myron being any more peculiar stoned than he already was.

So why do they call them fireworks anyway? A furnace, an internal combustion engine. Now that's fire working.

Fireworks are fire at play.

You can't be saved by works, Dave, even if you change what you call them. ;o)

Cops: Woman, 78, killed beau, 85
Victim had a new girlfriend, police say

By BETH WARREN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 06/24/05
Lena Driskell didn't have the look of a suspected killer — wearing a hair net, support stockings, bathrobe and slippers.

But Atlanta police say the 78-year-old's motive was quite common — a woman scorned.

Driskell didn't want to end her yearlong romance with her neighbor, widower Herman Winslow, police said. But Winslow, 85, had found another girlfriend.

Uninvited, Driskell kept stopping by her former beau's apartment, one floor below hers in Hightower Manor, a public-assisted complex for seniors and the disabled in southwest Atlanta.

Fed up, Winslow complained to security June 10. That night, Driskell told the guard, "I've got something for his [expletive]," police said.

Winslow was sitting on a couch in the lobby, reading a newspaper when Driskell pressed the gun to his temple and fired at least twice, said Atlanta police Lt. Doug Little.

After officers arrived, Driskell, whose hands and robe were splattered with blood, turned and waved the gun at them — with her finger still on the trigger.

"I did it, and I'd do it again," Little said she ranted.

The officer tucked his gun behind his back as he persuaded Driskell to drop hers.

Driskell, who remains jailed without bond, has a pretrial hearing today before a Fulton County judge.

Huh. Well, I'm not sure if I'm Baptist or not again. I think I might have been, what does Dave call it....excommunicated? I boycott all things Florida though. It's a personal thing regarding right to life.

I realized that there are no secrets. The equation is simply ass busting work + time = results. There are no shortcuts, no secrets, no easy solutions. Lyle McDonald

With all the spin removed on this topic, the bare truth stares me in the face. Being 53 and having worked pretty steady for 38 of those years and with the prospect of living another 25 years or so, and already having tried retirement and found it wanting, it makes me a little weary to think of 25 more years of "ass busting work + time = results."

But that just gives me notice to pay more attention to a goal Charlie and I have set,

Work 4 days a week Mon - Thur

Off Fri - Sun - Horses - Camping - Boating - Trips

It looks about half retired, I can do that for another 25 years or so. :)
