After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)
Oh, I'm down 21 lbs since January. That's on top of 20 that I lost last year. :o)
So, we can't look forward to Oscar Meyer putting out a special "Schwartzbein" package of lunchmeats? (There is now a "South Beach" one.)

Oh, by the way, it is snowing outside right now. :o(
Wow, you must be a stick. Mack is down 50 since last year.
I always thought I was a pretty active person. But since reading this book, I got to looking at the food value of all the foods we were eating (that I thought was healthy), I was appalled. It's a wonder I wasn't heavier then I was, and would have been a blimp if I hadn't been active. This past winter, first time in my life, I went thru months of really feeling bad, and my activity level really dropped, I'm luck we found this book when we did. I pretty sure I was heading for obesity before long:)
That was one of the things I really like about that book. It not only told you what to eat, but why you were eatiting and how our bodies work in a way even I could understand.
Becky
Not exactly; I'm still pretty solid. I'm not sure how much more I want to take off. I'd need to lose another 35 to be down to the weight I was twelve years ago, but I was probably too skinny then. Another 20-25 would probably be good, depending upon how much muscle mass I'm carrying.
Even where I'm at now, though, I have much more energy!
This book has been out for a lot longer then the South Beach thing. So I would say if there is no Scharwbein foods yet there is not going to be:). This book does not really promote loosing weight, as much as it promotes eating balanced. She highly reccommends throwing scales, fat charts, and calorie charts away. And even after a while you can increase your carbs alot more then other diets allow, as long as your balanced. Being balanced is the key.
It is amazing tho, how every week we see new products at the grocery story for "low carb" eating. I try my best to stay away from even those, and stick with the "real" unprocessed foods. About the only thing we fudge on is I do use bottled salad dressing, and we found a really good ice cream sweetened with splenda that is low in carbs. We get a small bowl of that each evening. Other then that it's all food in it's most natural forms.
Becky
Oh yuck:(. Had you put any of your flowers out? It's hot and humid here.
Becky
"Shopping the perimeter of the grocery store", as she put it.
I've done some planting, but only of hardy perennials. Last week we were in the upper 70s but, based on the long-range forecast, I knew that it would be cold the latter part of this week. It is 43° right now, grey and windy, with a few wet flakes smacking against the window periodically. We should be back up to seasonable temperatures, upper 60s, by early next week.
We are doing weight lifting. I really think it is helping, even tho I don't seem to be loosing much weight. I just can't not get on the scales:)
My weight lifting prgression is going rather slow I think. I was advanceing then hit a spot were when I was about half way thru the session, I was getting very nauseous, and it would take me several hours to recover. I backed off. Hated doing it because I feel now that I'm just wasting my time and energy but I'm not going to do something that makes me feel bad, I had enough of that this past winter.
Becky
Exactly:), wasn't that an interesting concept and so true:) Mack and I now call the aisles in the grocery store the chemical mine field:)

Weight training is great, but you really need to resist the temptation to overtrain. Listen to your body, and back off so you don't overdo it. Overtraining will tax your immune system and tear muscle down rather than building it up. Start slow, start with low weights, and build up. Light to moderate exercise is all you need to strive for. You'll get results.
And it really isn't such a big deal, after all, to bake a few chicken or turkey breasts instead of buying processed meat.
When I first started I had to use only the bar:), no weights on each end, and couldn't finish some of the sets. I'm now up to 20 for my starting weights, and finish the set with 35 on upper body. Lower body I was in a bit better shape.
Mack found this program on the internet, have you heard of it Body for life. Like I said it's working, but I don't think I'll see the results that the site said you would in 12 weeks. We're in our 6th week. This week I missed one day, as I have had a cold, and just didn't feel well.
Becky
Exactly. I just now cook alot each time, so we have left overs for lunch. More and more neither one of us really wants to go out anywhere. We have a few times, and, well, eating out is not such a treat anymore when you know how toxic all that stuff is:)
Becky
I am familiar with Body for Life. I think as written it is, well, more for the under-40 crowd. ;o) Easy enough to adapt the program to fit your personal level of fitness. Just keep it up, don't over-exert yourself, and don't worry about the progress. It will come.
I'll get grilled chicken, or a steak, or a big salad. Many restaurants will let you substitute vegetables for the potato. Sure, it may not be as healthy as what you make at home, but you can still eat out. I took the kids to Burger King last night, and I had the garden salad topped with grilled chicken.
We topped 80 Tuesday (and Wednesday) for the first time since September. I'm a week or so away from hauling the A/Cs out.

With our new super Wal Mart, that includes tires and aquarium fish. ;-)
