The Neverending Story

The Neverending Story

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)

I didn't read the whole article; I just liked the headline.

James Lileks' The Bleat on Pope Benedict v.16

My favorite part was a little farther down:

"The selection of Ratzinger was initially heartening, simply because he made the right people apoplectic."

Works for me.

Also: "To those who want profound change, consider an outsider’s perspective: the Catholic Church is the National Review of religion. You may live long enough to see it become the Weekly Standard. In your dreams it might become the New Republic. But it’s never going to be the Nation."

Amen

I believe protocol dictates you wait until his installation Mass is finished. Say about 7AM ET Sunday.

When I do, according to your interpretation, begin bashing him are you prepared to acknowledge I have "bashed" Cardinal Ratzinger in the past so it is not really "Pope bashing" rather, it is Ratzinger bashing? :-)

I'd say "no".

Since you obviously have no personal knowledge about the man, any knock on your part would be seen as knee-jerk acceptance of anything negative you read about him.

It would make you look cheap.

Oh? He's a new born baby with no record? Nothing in writing? No controversial actions or decisions in his past roles?

You have no personal knowledge about me. Please never criticize or attack me in the future.

It would make you look cheap.

You know, Mack asking a question and you asking it are not always the same thing.

That said, I have no illusions that you will refrain from informing us of your opinion should you feel the need to do so. I'm not sure what basis you may have for criticising the Pope, but I'm sure we'll find out.

You may note I said "according to your interpretation". I did this for a reason. You wanna know why?

Because, according to you, any disagreement with the Pope and/or the actions of the RCC is "bashing" or "hate".

I have told you many times I have no hate in my heart but I have many disagreements with the RCC, Protestants, the President of the United States, among others and I will continue to express these disagreements.

I must admit I experienced some hate this morning. I felt a little soreness in my forearm and discovered a tick deeply burroughed into my skin. I "hated" that and "hated" that ugly creature. I gently put him to sleep with some ether (starting fluid) and removed him with tweezers. Unfortunately he didn't awake from his sleep. Oh well! I don't hate him anymore.

Not at all. I think you'll find Mack introduced the word "bash" to this conversation, and he was being playful.

Many people have principled disagreements with the Church. Others have foolish stereotypes and caricatures, which they lean upon as a substitute for an honest examination.

No. Just no time for you to speak intelligently (I'll pass on the obvious jab) on those actions.

You have no personal knowledge about me. Please never criticize or attack me in the future.

I think you're missing the point. We've had an off-an-on dialog for years now. I can criticize (though never "attack") you quite credibly. :-)

Cool! Now we know who to e-mail when we need clarification. ;o)

LOL I e-mailed the Vatican several years ago. They even emailed me back. They must gets tons of email. I was surprised I heard back from them.

As an aside, I found out the other day that we have Quakers in our area. I never knew that. Know where I ran into them? At Congregation Ahavas Israel. No kidding! They were using the library. :)

I thought it was pretty cool.

Looks like Pope Benedict XVI may be okay. He's got the right people ticked off! I like it!

Do you happen to know if all the top contenders for Pope wrote books, just in case they were elected?
