After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)
How many ballots?
Any hanging chads left to be counted?

Benedict XVI.
Is Ratzinger a good choice in your opinion?

The quickness of the election also shows that the Church is united fairly well. I'm happy that my predictions of a long holdout didn't hold up.
I'm just glad it wasn't Scola, cause "Pope Scola" would be just too funny.

Absolutely. He knows what he believes and why he believes it. He was John Paul's closest advisor, so he would be best in continuing the legacy. With perhaps a bit more of Germanic order.
I read something yesterday where he allowed a book to be written which was basically him in a Q&A session with a reporter. I can't think of many world leaders who are prepared to answer any and all questions off the cuff and secure enough to let such an interview be published.

I read he is 78 years old. Is he reported to be in strong health?
It makes sense doesn't it?
He turned 78 last Saturday. By all accounts he is in good health. He certainly looks good.
Interesting is that among his accomplishments, he was the president of the commission that wrote the Catechism.

When you think about it as "inevitable," yes. Good point.

From what I know... he's an outstanding choice.
Had this happened a year ago, you would have had an official papal declaration that Kerry could not receive communion.
Cool! Now we know who to e-mail when we need clarification. ;o)
I don't know if you can say that for sure. The new Holy Father is certainly very orthodox, but I don't think we can guarantee that he is going to start waving his ax around, so to speak. I think his election shows that the transformation of the church is taking place. The deformers and vandals of the 60s can do little but shake their fists and die off.

He already said it... it's just the the American Bishops said "you're not the bossa me!"
Now he is!
Trivia question: who was the last German pope?
The Rocky Pope - "Adrian!"
It would have to be over 500 years ago, long before the nation state of "Germany" came into being.
SD
I told Reggie to mail the pope a long time ago, and he never listened to me. I even gave him the address. "The Pope, Vatican City"
