The Neverending Story

After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)

Most people don't exercise strict grammar online. I know I always don't. As long as he's got a grasp of formal writing as opposed to informal, I think you're ok.

You are absoloutely correct. In fact, when I hire an electrician, plumber, carpenter, or even someone to hot top my driveway ;-), I have no problem understanding their "grammar" nor do I put on airs and "correct" their grammar.

On the other hand there are professions where correct language usage is critical. I made a living in those kind of places and was forced to "play the game" because of the people I interacted with.

The English language, especially "Americanized" English, is constantly evolving but there are some rules of grammar which are important especially in the "professional" world.

I believe Dave was making a gentle dig but an important one. If you are going to compete in the English Language world do it correctly.

Online, it's a useful thing to jab pretentious know-it-alls with. I should know, I've fallen victim to the same thing.

Joshua used to complain about grammar exercises. I agreed with him that some of it really was "stupid stuff". ( esp. diagramming sentences). It wasn't easy to be an under achiever and a teacher. I was always so happy when we finished grammar and moved on to literature. That was enjoyable. I did keep quiet about what I though about using letters to do math though. I figured he might need that "stuff" someday:')

I was transferred to "College Level" English from the "General" level in the middle of my sophomore year primarily because I tested so well.

Unfortunately "diagramming" wasn't required in any of the tests I took nor had I ever been introduced to it.

I fought the system all the way through school and took C's in English because I was unable (refused) to diagram a sentence.

I still think diagramming is useful for the very few who will major in language(s).

So far today, I processed and filed my weekly new hire report, went through unemployment reports, updated some internet job listings, and right now I'm entering bills received over the past week and doing a payables run. Read through and signed off on the new contract for our company internet service, read through and signed off on a contract with a new long distance carrier, and reviewed a quote for some new business insurance we are purchasing. I have some tax stuff to do in the next week as well, so hopefully I can get some time to work on that tomorrow.

In other words, the usual! ;o)

What are you guys up to today?

I'm still getting sorted out with my new TV and Internet cable setup.

Yesterday I couldn't use Free Republic until I disabled the Norton firewall. Of course you don't want to run without a firewall so last night I installed the Adelphia "Freedom Suite" which includes a firewall.

This morning my computer was so screwed up (conflict with AOL stuff and MSN stuff which screwed everything to a farethewell). I had to reinstate my computer to yesterday morning to get it running. I dunno. I just dunno.

At the moment I'm on FR with the firewall disabled. I have to check out the whole mess.
