After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)
Not that there's anything wrong with that ;~D
Take too long and I'm thinkin' "...wonder if I have any pings?"
That would be me :~D
I love him too :~D
1) Brings to mind the "When Harry Met Sally" scene; "Is one of us supposed to be a dog in this scenario? I am the dog? I am the dog?"
2) Please add me to your Tolkien Ping list (since I have familial rights to it).
You killed a Neverending thread, honey.
My turn. Huh??? :')
You know; "Always finish what you st " ?
Or more civil discourse?
Ya' got me! ;)
Callahan has one more year at Nebraska to get things resolved...
I have to deal with un-civil folks at work! TNS can be a place of "rest" - until - well, I won't say it! ;)
If civil means peace do you ever wonder why do we have: civil death, civil defense, civil disobedience and civil wars?
Because we're still waiting for moshiach.
:o)
This Chrisian dictionary seldom has anything I'm looking for but can go page after page about old men and buildings. I'm assuming this means Messiah. Yeah , He's coming. (again):')
Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. (John 5:28-29, KJV)
It seems pretty clear that in this passage the author is stating that the rewards and punishments of the afterlife are based upon works. See also Matthew chapter 25. How do you reconcile this passage with others which emphasize faith/the role of Jesus?
John 5:19-27 (King James Version) 20For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
21For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
22For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
23That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
24Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
25Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
26For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
27And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
Well yeah:). People who believe in Christ will be rewarded in heaven for their good works, but thier good works are not what gets them there. This passage is not saying eternal life in heaven is the reward for the good works.

Sure, and feel free to draw in other passages too. What intrigued me about the verses I cited is that is specifically says, "done good" and "done evil".
