The Neverending Story

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)

I'm being told I'm wrong and everybody hates me and even if we don't leave the school that they will probably kick us out.

Is being liked more important then being right??? Sounds like some people have a serious problem with caving into peer pressure.

Keep reminding them YOU ARE ON THE ATTACK. An attack on a bad book that needs to be attacked.

Becky

Tuffy, just a suggestion but try not to let this come between you and your husband. Right or wrong my husband doesn't like scenes and happiest when everything running smoothly. I'm usually the one that stirs things up and I hear the same thing sometimes. That's just the way he is. When it comes right down to it yall only have each other. He has already said you were pulling the kids out. The other parents are aware. You have done what you can. Hold your head up high and try to talk with your guy about this and how hurt you are but don't let these people try to divide you two. When people go against Christ they aren't attacking you but Him.

I agree with CindyD, Tuffy.

It's most likely that your husband would have preferred a quieter, more private approach to this issue.

But you really weren't satisfied with his approach either.

And it very well may be that he's smarting just a bit because you weren't satisfied with his efforts to resolve the problem.

Ultimately though, it's just that the two of you have diiferent ideas about how to resolve the problem.

The blessing is that you and your husband agree on your main goal (that of shielding your children from that type of material).

The difference between his approach and your approach is that you informed other parents of the concern that you had. I believe that that was a valuable service that you performed.

Thank you for the kind support, ya'll. I'm not sure I'd be able to get through this without it.

I'm now getting more feedback from parents, all very supportive of my position and glad that I brought this out in the open. They don't want their children reading this either, and have expressed sorrow that my daughter and her classmates now have this imagery in their minds.

I'll keep forging ahead...

"Is being liked more important then being right???"

Thanks for that kick in the pants, Becky. I needed that wake up call. No, I'm not going to compromise my beliefs just so these people will like me.

" They claimed to be christian, but are teaching non christian material and deviant porn at that"

This is the crux of the matter. How did I turn into the bad guy??? It's incomprehensible.

I'm sorry this has turned into such a problem for you. It's tuff when parents disagree on how to proceed. Maybe just proceed now, on your own. Drop it with the other parents. They're informed, let them handle it for their own kids. Your concern should be your own children.

I'd set up a private meeting with just you guys, and the teacher/principal. Don't mention other people, keep the focus on the book and what can be resoloved about making sure YOUR daughter is not exposed to anything else like that.

If they bring up the others, don't apologize, but just say, that really is not the point of why I'm here, I want to talk about this book and it's contents. Keep going back to that, no matter what.

Becky

You exposed them and their deeds.

Recall that those whom Jesus exposed ... ultimately killed him.

Well, I started my first Baptist doctrine class tonight. We are going slow and it looks like it's going to take longer than 8 weeks. Tonight we discussed who came first , The chicken (Baptists) or the egg (Catholics) and Armenians and Calvinists. I think I might be a Armvinist:')

If the person has never previously been baptized in any church, or if the baptism was not in the proper "form" (if, for example, the person was a convert from 'Oneness Pentacostalism' or LDS), then he will be baptized. If someone was baptized in most any other mainstream non-Catholic Christian church, then that baptism is recognized as valid. If there is any question as to the validity of the person's baptism, they'll do what is called a "conditional baptism".

Oh, that depends on local custom, which is often dictated by the weather and the baptismal facilities available. I once saw an adult baptism where the person being baptized stood in water and had water poured over them. Somewhere between sprinkling and full immersion. Dave might have a better idea how frequently the different methods of baptism are used in this country. In any case, all are recognized as valid methods.
