After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)
We heated this house for nearly 7 years with a wood burning stove, with wood we cut ourselves. There was no central heat at all.
We now only heat with a propane stove in the living room. We had central heat put in but it is way to expensive to run.

I don't see what you could add to that beautiful garden in your back yard to make it prettier:')
Yep that's how Eddie feels. He would be happy concreting the entire back yard.
The difference is we didn't know we were roughing it.
We are so very spoiled today.
But the surface of the stove is delightful for heating up your gloves on a cold winter's day.
Or so I read about in the Sunday paper one day in a woman's reminiscing about her family's old stove.

I agree. We didn't have CH/A either when I was growing up.
I want a real fireplace someday. We had one of those unit ones once but it didn't put out any heat. I would like to have one in my livingroom and bedroom when we build our cabin.
Fireplaces are very inefficient. Most of the heat goes right up the chimney. You want a Franklin stove or some other type of unit that moves the heat into the room.

When do you consider it is cold enough to require heat?
When the outside temperature is:
50 degrees
40 "
30 "
20 "
10 "
0 "
-10 "
-20 "
This winter has been warmer than last year. The coldest night we have had so far was -9 degrees. I almost turned the heat on. :-)
No, I want a big rock fireplace, lots of windows to see the snow falling, a blanket, and Eddie to cuddle up next to:')
"Splain to me why the Pope wasn't protected from the flu?
The Virgin Mary took the night off?

No, no, no. The stove would get so hot it would melt the gloves. We did keep a big old cast iron pot, filled with water, on top of the stove. (Humidifier).
Now the cast iron cooking stoves usually had a rack a few feet above the stove where you could warm things up. This must have been what she was talking about.
Thanks, CD.
The roses and hydrangeas will give the yard some much-needed color during the summer months.
The new junipers will go into a spot in the front (next to the driveway) where the grass struggles to survive every year.
Actually, I'm serious. Wouldn't it be protocol to immunize him against the flu assuming they didn't think getting the flu shot would be riskier than getting the flu?
It appears he is doing well and will be going home in a few days but do you really think he had the flu?
Right. Hanging above the stove, at a comfortable distance.
SD
I would think so. But even getting a flu shot doesn't guarantee you won't get some fomr of the flu anyway. Flu shots are an educated guess, based on last year's strains. And I don't know whether he got one or not anyway.
It appears he is doing well and will be going home in a few days but do you really think he had the flu?
He was probably just funnin' with the media, seeing how fast they could get people rushed to Rome. ;-)
SD
Can't you just see him coming out to the balcony, giving a big wink, and saying "gotchya!"
Crazy cat.
