Need Help Downloading Macromedia Flash (Shameless, Desperate Vanity)

Posted on 01/11/2005 6:50:12 AM PST by LibSnubber

FRiends, I am desperate. Me, middle-aged stay-at-home mom, has gone back to college after 25 years. I need to download Macromedia Flash in order to view what appears to be a majority of my work online. I've tried everything and nothing is working. I've got Windows XP.

Can anyone help me? I'm risking this vanity because if this doesn't work, I think I will drop out because if I can't understand this computer crap - how will I ever become a nurse? Flame me if you've got nothing better to do - but honestly, no one can upset me more than I already am.

Thank you and for all those inclined, please pray for me.

Please note that XP should have a version of Flash Player installed by default. To download and install a newer version, you will have to uninstall previous version.
To see if you have it installed, check your Add/Remove programs.
This page has help with difficulties, including setting IE ActiveX and security controls to assure download capability:

You may need both the Flash and Shockwave downloads...

That's the funny part - Shockwave works perfectly...

Actually, it's there. It's under all the browser menus and toolbars, and usually in small font. It's (as I understand it) a result of Windows XP security patches. Also, are you logged into XP as Administrator, or does your user account have administrator privileges ?

If all else fails, ask a neighborhood geek kid for help. No kidding, there's always a bunch of tech-savvy kids around who would be happy to help.

Yes, I'm the Administrator on this computer. I hope I can find a geek in time - I've got homework due tomorrow.

Some popup blocking is momentarily defeated by holding the CTRL key while clicking, you might want to try that.

For heaven's sake, don't worry. Someone here will figure this out so you can proceed with your plans. Trial and error will git 'er done.

some firewalls like zonealarm block animations in there custome settings. Just throwing that out there. The install is a piece of cake so it might be something goofy like that

Flash can be configured to work in Firefox, if you want, merely by reinstalling Flash after Firefox is installed. Flash autodetects and asks for confirmation.

Thank you so much for your support. It's all so overwhelming and so much has changed since I got my first degree 25 years ago. Going to class the old way was easy compared to this online stuff. Everything is online. Totally different and it didn't help that I registered late for this semester either.

"if I can't understand this computer crap - how will I ever become a nurse?"

I always read the computer help threads because I need so much help in this area. I can't offer advice but I did want to say congratulations to you for what you are doing. Good for you. I'm sure you'll be a great nurse.

Oh honey, that's the first thing I tried. I think I'll go try to uninstall any/everything...

Thanks - this is something I've always wanted to do. Going to nursing school has been the only thing so far that has gotten me excited and has helped me move on from grieving the loss of my dad.

Thanks! I just realized in Firefox you have to go to the downloads window to open and install.

It's working fine now.

Do You allow Windows to automatically update? If so, you have Service Pack 2 installed. Macromedia needs an additional Active X control installed - a link to which is supposed to be in that gold bar.

The control is named: "Macromedia Flash Player 7 from 'Macromedia, Inc.'" The site says: When the Internet Explorer - Security Warning dialog box titled appears, click the Install button.

Note: Please ensure that "Never install software from Macromedia, Inc." is NOT checked"

Good Luck!

Well, like most things it's just a question of familiarity. The more you use it the better you'll be with it.
I bought my first computer at age 35 and my daughter had to tell me "Mom you have to click on something" lol
Within a few years I had a moonlighting job moderating a Windows help forum online. I can tell you a big part of finding the answers is simply using the search engines and reading.
Anyway, you're already ahead of many of us who never got the first degree lol

I assume you are using WindowsXp and IE. Is that correct?

I also assume you have clicked on Download Now and found the installer on your desktop. Is that correct?
