LONDON (AFP) - Oscar-winning writer-director Oliver Stone blamed "raging fundamentalism in morality" for the frosty reception that his new film "Alexander" is getting in his native United States.
In London for its British premiere, Stone, 58, said that after a career full of cage-rattling work, he thought a biopic of Alexander the Great, the 4th century Macedonian-born conquerer, would be "a safe subject".
But he said he was "quite taken aback by the controversy and fierceness of the reviews" which greeted its US release, including outrage at the film's suggestion that Alexander was bisexual.
"Sexuality is a large issue in America right now, but it isn't so much in other countries," he said.
"There's a raging fundamentalism in morality in the United States. From day one audiences didn't show up. They didn't even read the reviews in the south because the media was using the words: 'Alex is Gay'."
"Alexander" stars Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie, both seen at the London premiere, but its US box office take so far has been less than a quarter of the 150 million dollars that it cost to make.
Greece wanted to sue Oliver Stone for his portrayal. Didn't need American Fundamentalism to sink it.
Oh Cry Me A River. It's both.
Already posted.
i guess he doesn't count greece as being upset, just us. hm. myopic.
At least Stone has his ego in check.
Pathetic attempt to drum up interest in this dog.
I wanted to see a hot gay history movie, but I heard that this one was a REALLY bad film.
O.K., you beat me to it. You must have posted while I was formatting. : ^ }
He got stopped by that lousy rotten morality. And the problem is...??
He should have cast an unknown instead of that Irish? twit as the lead actor. I walked out of Troy because I could not get past the fact that Brad Pitt was the lead actor.
lets see will and grace is a big hit but when someone makes a 20 hour gayporn film with no real plot all of a sudden america is anti-gay? crap is crap, gay is gay. get is straight.

No, I didn't go see it because I figured it would suck and just an attempt to re-create Braveheart.
No. There are tons of immoral films making big money in America. It's just that this movie sucks so bad that even liberals won't go to see it.
The movie bombed because it wasn't about a subject that an American could or should relate to.
This guy reigned 2400 yrs. ago. And that matters now, why?
Most people today don't even know who we fought in WW2, let alone go see a biopic about an historical figure from 300 BC.
The only folks worth watching in the film were the elephants.
So far, they have done more to help the tsunami victims than most of Hollywood has.
Actually the reason it got a frosty reception is it's a piece of dreck. It was painful to sit though. peole were laughing, people just gave up and left.
