Am I The Only One Sick Of The Excessive Tsunami Coverage?
1/4/2005

Posted on 01/04/2005 12:53:39 PM PST by Williams

Am I the only one sick of the tsunami coverage? Maybe it's the obvious fact the media has no other big story it wants to cover. Maybe the idiotic anti-Bush angle they have developed. But I think it's just the plain old fact the disaster coverage has reached the point where it is out of proportion to the disaster itself.

Of course the tsunami was a terrible event and there needs to be a major relief effort. But I started getting annoyed when they called it the worst natural disaster in history. I knew I'd lived during 200 or 300,000 deaths at a time caused by cyclones in Pakistan/Bangladesh/India in the 70's.

The disaster is an important one but it's spread out over many countries. And I am highly suspicious that many of these corrupt governments began upping the casualty figures, knowing it would mean more share of the aid pie. Not that I want to become a tsunami denier, but it just seems like another example of the media's chicken little approach to the World.

Conservative commentators have noted that tragedies like Darfur and Rwanda killed more people but didn't get the coverage. But ecven without the political overtones, the coverage of this thing is disturbingly reminiscent of Scot Peterson/Princess Diana/ etal.

I think it reached it's height with Diane Sawyer yelling at Colin Powell this morning and insisting that Japan is giving more, yada yada yada. The media cares about no one and we all know they will let certain groups be slaughtered while they collectively look the other way.

Am I the only one sick of the tsunami coverage?

No.

I think we should bring back the 17 minute newscast.

Yes. Do what I do, turn your TV off and watch a movie."

How about Farenheit 911? (sarcasm)

I hit "post" and then selected "vanity" as my only category. Where did I go wrong?

Bangladesh lost 300,000 ... Not that anyone in the US media remembers.

Well, I remember it. I still have the album.

I don't agree with your thinking that the reason it's getting the play is the anti-Bush angle. When 150K people are killed by a natural disaster, the networks run with it.

Think about how much air time the hurricanes got this summer.

When the Michael Jackson sex scandal circus opens later this month, we will all be longing for the tsunami coverage again or anything else that came before, even a rerun of the Presidential campaign.

Gotta keep it in the forefront. There is a lot of money involved and now that the U.N. has got the world, especially the U.S., into a "who can donate the most money" situation we are not going to see the end of coverage for a long long time.

The coverage of the tsunami has been proportionate to its importance. The coverage of everything else has been disproportionate and has inured you.

You should turn off the Scott Peterson trials so you have the emotional energy in reserve for when it is appropriate, like now.

For those that are old enough to recall...was there coverage like this of the 1976 earthquake in China? It was about twice as deadly as the current disaster.
*****
No and there was not a global bidding war for money either, to prove who can give the most to countries known to be Muslim and known to kill and enslave. I'm not giving one frickin dime to the enemy I don't care how old they are....wolf cubs grow up to be wolves...duh!!
I'll go help the 3 families piled into one house with no heat due to flooding in my area this year (that can't get assistance!!!no insurance)....or better yet some of those in Florida.

THIS COUNTRY GETS DUMBER BY THE YEAR.

I apologize for my ignorance, but then why does the latest posts site have a category called "vanity" when you go to post?

You're not the only one who is weary of the insensitve,exploito-journalism that characterizes MSM coverage of everything these days. The mindless cackling of air-headed news girls and guys. The slick, sickening file tape of glistening dead bodies and matter of fact commentary of ghastly aftermath all dumped into your living room like a pile of dirty laundry.
And the tawdry cheap-shot exploitation by all the guilty factions the world over who jump this story like fleas on a wet passing dog.
OK! There may have been worse disasters. But,where is genuine human compassion in the face of this dreadful tragedy? This is real kiddies. Where is your heart?
Rue the day when you find the cupboard bare of emotion and care. For in the hardening of our hearts, our own deaths will have also slipped away.
Get angry at the mindless, exploitive ,uncaring coverage. Those souls are connected to us. They are our loss.

Forgive me for believing, as I do, that in the United States the Florida hurricanes and 9/11 deserve much coverage as they directly affect this nation. I'm not against covering the tsunami, I'm against non-stop repetitive coverage, I don't think the media is sincere about it, and I definitely resent the anti-American angle. I'm interested in the story, but I think I can complain it does not require 16.5 hours coverage per 24 hour day.

I'm sorry, but that IS funny. Excessive praying.

Reminds me of something I heard in a Bible Study once. The minister was talking about the way people don't really believe Biblical teaching anymore. He was counselling a man who was getting a divorce. The man told him that he felt the divorce was G_d's way of saying he could sleep around. I kid thee not.
