Am I the only one sick of the tsunami coverage? Maybe it's the obvious fact the media has no other big story it wants to cover. Maybe the idiotic anti-Bush angle they have developed. But I think it's just the plain old fact the disaster coverage has reached the point where it is out of proportion to the disaster itself.
Of course the tsunami was a terrible event and there needs to be a major relief effort. But I started getting annoyed when they called it the worst natural disaster in history. I knew I'd lived during 200 or 300,000 deaths at a time caused by cyclones in Pakistan/Bangladesh/India in the 70's.
The disaster is an important one but it's spread out over many countries. And I am highly suspicious that many of these corrupt governments began upping the casualty figures, knowing it would mean more share of the aid pie. Not that I want to become a tsunami denier, but it just seems like another example of the media's chicken little approach to the World.
Conservative commentators have noted that tragedies like Darfur and Rwanda killed more people but didn't get the coverage. But ecven without the political overtones, the coverage of this thing is disturbingly reminiscent of Scot Peterson/Princess Diana/ etal.
I think it reached it's height with Diane Sawyer yelling at Colin Powell this morning and insisting that Japan is giving more, yada yada yada. The media cares about no one and we all know they will let certain groups be slaughtered while they collectively look the other way.
Yes. Do what I do, turn your TV off and watch a movie.
LOL. This reminds me of what happened in church last Sunday. A member of our Adult Bible Fellowship complained about our excessive praying.

I'm getting kind of sick of the "personal stories" coverage, the ones told over and over and over: the kid on a mattress, an old man holding on a pole..the models missing boyfriend.blah, blah, blah.
The tsunami affected thousands of people, thousands more are helping them..that is worthy of coverage. I would like to know how restoration/salvage/humanitarian efforts are coming along, but the same blond boy being held by his crying father over and over again..is..just..too..much.
The coverage is a fraction of that afforded to 9/11. 9/11 was definitely an extremely newsworthy story, yet only a tiny fraction the number of people died.

I agree a few million dead in Rwanda and througout Africa.. or all the Sudanese Christian children taken as sex slaves tortured and murdered by muslims hardly raised an eyebrow (it seems) let alone a shed tear...
No rush of our military to save them though...or the UN or world outcry against the Muslims...

I've seen estimates ranging from 100k to 500k... we don't yet know the full extent of the damage, although we have a clearer picture now than before. When it first struck, people thought only 20k might have died.
Probably not.
But most have the class, good taste and common sense not to embarrass themselves by admitting it.

I think it's already starting to die down. With Congress reconvening, and the bloodbath the RATS are seeking over the Gonzales hearing are going to take over starting in the next day or two. And then there's the Iraqi elections and Michael Jackson's trial. Poor Greta must be beside herself having to talk about a tsunami instead of the latest trial of the century with her rountable of lawyers...

What I'm sick of is people not using the FR posting guidelines.
This is a vanity, should be labeled as such, and posted in the Chat or Bloggers forum.
I think a lot of it is because they are trying to fill as much time as possible on air. In Arizona the big story is -- rain. A creek overflowed and they covered the same flippin' story using two different reporters.
