Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Colic can follow weather where there isn't access to normal grazing... Bay colicked in our drought when the grass had all turned to dust.
This snow might be part of it too, sometimes they don't drink enough if water is freezing.... and hay can mold quickly if it's been damp.
My saddle
It looks as though we've passed through the worst of it. He is no longer worried about his discomfort and in extremely interested in the two mares twenty feet away.
We are going to watch him for a couple more hours before we put him back in his stall and then feed bran mash tomorrow morning.
Can't find a cause for it other than maybe our really lousy weather - his feed and hay is all fine. He has a heater in his water so he should be drinking enough.

Do you have another shot if it recurs in the night? If I recall Banamine gets you about six hours relief if symptoms are going to return.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ignore you - I just wanted everyone to know we seem to have turned the corner. My husband is a vet tech and we have gone through this before although not often. He just scared the daylights out of me with him throwing himself down and rolling all the way over. That was as we came in to get the shot.
We would need a vet to tube him though, if the shot hadn't have worked - we don't have that equipment here, although we should.

Eddie's saddle is interesting... I haven't seen Corduras with leather skirting.... is it as light as yours? or heavier?
Keep an eye on him and keep the Banamine handy . . .

They didn't know their momma won at the time. Who wants to sit and look at your baby brother two hours? They had to be getting tired. No Prizes but IMO everyone won :')
Yes, we have a bottle. This last time, we got Flunixamine instead of Banamine - I think it's the about same thing but will look it up on line. The insert says once daily, onset within two hours, peak response occurs between 12-16 hours and duration is 24-36 hours. That is more potent than Banamine.
I think we are okay until morning but I'll be out a couple times at least to check on my boy.
His is about 3 pounds heavier. I just wanted to ask yall what you see as far as pro and cons. My trainer doesn't like mine and wants me to start riding with his and if I like it order one. We have them in the garage because he's going to add holes for me.
Yes, you are so right there. We're a good hour and a half from the vet and although he'll drop everything and run out, it's a distance. Tonight there is no way I'd ask him of that, NHP asked non-essentials to stay off the roads.

I'm gonna have to learn to give these injections if I am to run a boarding stable, I think. Or would that get me into liability trouble? Maybe I am better off requiring that vets be called. Question for the lawyers.
Why doesn't she like yours? Does it not fit you, or the horse?
I like his better than yours. Maybe it's the angle but yours looks almost like a barrel racer saddle or something. It doesn't look like it would be as comfortable as his.
