Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Cutting horses are amazing.
Please tell me you're a woman...
Beaker, what state are you in?
Uh ... last time I checked I was. Why?
Been busy but fine. I was riding 2-3 xs a week but now down to 1 lately because of work and the weather. No big deal to you long time riders but I'm really pleased with myself. I've gone to trotting a few feet with a horse taking me all over the place to troting a whole lesson, in and out of cones, where ever I want her to go. Still looking for that best seat though. I'm finding it but keep losing it. My trainer says that's ok because I have a very bouncy horse though. I haven't been brave enough to canter/lope yet. I want to get a little more secure troing. It's gonna happen soon though caz Sarah Lee has several speeds of trotting and I keep bumping her up. She can only go so fast and she likes to go. My trainer laughs and tells me I "better slow her down" if I'm gonna stay trotting. I can't make myself do it but it's just a matter of time before I push her up while riding. Funny huh? I was the same way going from a walk to a trot:')
I'm always scouting around for someone to ride with and my husband would be a little upset if I told him I was going trail riding with a man.
Good comeback, by the way. Cracked me up.
I'm near Denton. Ever go on the trails during the weekdays?
You're doing the right thing by really taking your time. When you do start to canter, I bet you're gonna love it, though! Winnie has a very bouncy trot but a smooth as silk lope. Your horse may be the same way.
Right after I started riding I went on a short trail ride with this guy at the stables. He was just trying to help me out by showing me where they were. I still felt a little uncomfortable and asked my husband if he was sure it was ok. He started teasing me and told me he had no concerns what so ever because he knew I wouldn't get off the horse caz I couldn't get back on without my riding block and someone holding her head. He told me I better not fall off though because if I came back walking I was going to have some explaining to do.
Yes I do want to geld him, but the decision is not just mine, and he has a testicle that has not come down, so there are special considerations, and costs. He's still a happy camper though. But his falling in love with a little bull was not my intent.
My husband would say he doesn't mind but he would. And I avoid rocking the boat at all costs, know what I mean?
Hey! Good to see you made it!! Lots of nice people and good information here.
Welcome to all the new people on the thread!
I'm in Mass.
Hey don't worry about it! Progess is progress! How is Okie doing?
I have taken some dressage long ago, read books, and ~homeschooled~ best I can. Someday I hope to have the right horse to try some lessons for real. I tried a little with my Bay when I got him back, but he really hates pattern arena work and collection. He's a trail horse at heart. But I have always ridden English.
Eventually that moment of synchonization will last longer, you'll both get more consistent if you work at it. There is a lot you can work on at just the trot, rather than a widely variable pace, I might try get her to do first a steady slow trot and also regular cadenced, predictable medium trot. Try to hit one specific speed and rhythm or the other at any given time, and don't let her just ad-lib between them. You will learn to feel how to sit the next step easier that way ;~D
Ah... well that does make it more complicated then. ;~D
I do hope you have some pictures of him you can post! we can help!
I have no idea what you are talking about (wink) lol
Yeah that's what my trainer says. She tells me to pick one speed and keep her at it. I try. I can keep her going but I keep speeding her up. Have to work on it.
Okie and Eddie loping all over the place. Show offs:') Finally got more shoes on him.
